How do I network my ThinkPads?

#1 Post by Bookworm » Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:07 pm

I have an intel Pro Wireless 2200 in my ThinkPad 240, and a DLink DWL-G650 PC Card in my 600X. Both of them connect to free wifi networks, and detect many networks in the neighborhood. The two computers are side by side and do not detect each other.

I clicked on the Wireless Network Connection icon on the task bar, then on "Set up a wireless network for a home or small office" and set up a network with the same name on each computer. I suspect this is not correct. How do I unsetup the network? XP does not seem to have any option to get rid of a set up network.

After I get rid of the mess, how do I force the computers to connect?

Do I understand correctly?

You have wireless network interface card built-into your TP 240.
You have wireless network interface PC Card in your TP 600X.
You do not have a wireless router in your home.

You need to purchase a wireless router. Make sure that it is able to "down-step" to -11b or -11g (whatever protocol that your network interface cards use).

I was able to pick-up a D-Link router with failed -11b wireless that no longer works. I simply connect both of my computers with a pair of CAT-5 cables. I see no need for you to "undo" your home wireless network in Windows. It appears that both computers are using the same network name. I think that I use "MS-HOME" (or something like that). All that is left for you to do is to go into Windows Explorer on the first computer, right-click on file folder that you wish to share, and enable sharing -- and go into Windows Explorer on the second computer and browse your "Network Places".

You need to see if the there are provision to set up an "ad hoc" WiFi connection in your network connection software.

Most connection software defaults to using "infrastructure" (router based) connections, but often has an option for establishing an "ad hoc" connection directly to other WiFi client equipped systems.

You may find a Google search on Wifi ad hoc yields some useful information.

Cheers,
