T420 CPU whine

#1 Post by birthdaymonkey » Thu Apr 14, 2011 5:30 pm

I posted here a few weeks ago about CPU whine on my i3 T410. I ended up sending that machine back because of the issue--it's a real deal breaker for me.

Can anybody report on whether or not the 420s suffer from this obnoxious, maddening noise?

Of course the sample size may not be large enough to make an accurate assessment yet, but if anyone can report in, it will help me decide whether or not the T420 is the laptop for me.

Don't know about the T420s, but I haven't seen anyone with a W520 that's had the issue.
I think they've fixed it- but I don't know.

I was advised (since I'm getting an exchange for a W520) that it wasn't a good idea to order a T410/510/W510/410s because of the whine but so far I think they've fixed it.

I've tried googling CPU with the T420 and Sandy Bridge in general, and the problem seems to be less prevalent than it was with previous Intel CPUs. I think I'll give it another month or two and check back here frequently before I decide it's safe to buy a T420.
