T30 battery issue

#1 Post by Andrevas » Fri Apr 15, 2011 4:10 am

I have done some searching on the subject, and have followed IBM/Lenovo's instructions on reviving batteries, but so far I have been unsuccessful. I have a factory IBM battery for my Thinkpad that has a first use date of 2009 with only 17 cycles that's not taking anything close to a real full charge. I know I probably screwed it by never running it down/always running it off AC when I do use it as infrequently as I do, but I'm not sure how to proceed reviving it.

before attemping to revive it, battery had 16 cycles and was at a reported 100% charge according to the Config utility with a 27Whr charge.

after disabling auto-shutdown/suspend and running SuperPi 32M to expedite power failure, it shutdown when the battery monitor was reporting 9.3v. I then left it shutdown and charged overnight. for it's 17th charge cycle, it only charged to a reported 100% with a 22Whr charge =\

I think this battery is toast, but I hope not as it has so little use. my other 3 spares have much more and I would expect this out of them since they AFAIK all have over 100 cycles on them (already tested one that's verified 118 cycles, it only took a 18.7Whr charge).

any suggesstions on what I could attempt here would be great as I already spent all my extra cash recently buying a WD3200BEVE, 0 cycle Ultrabay battery (that took a full 39Whr charge, yay!), and an Atheros SuperAG wifi card for my T30 already, and making my main battery work to it's full capacity would be the final piece to the puzzle to make this laptop up to snuff again.

I sounds like the primary battery has indeed died. You have nothing to lose by trying the deep cycle again and see if it makes any changes. So go with anouther deep cycle and cross your fingers.

well the second spare I pulled from storage took a 30Whr charge and the batt health tool said this one is actually good so I deep cycled this one instead of trying again with the low cycle count one. got it down to 8.67v before it shut off. letting it cool down before I charge it as it was at 45C when it died.

sidenote: is that Charlie in the banner? that's just creepy, as I recently spent a week at the Montecito Inn (which good ol' Charlie built in 1928, his face is plastered everywhere in that hotel)

Yep that's Charlie, with one of Bill's birds on his shoulder.
Bill, by the way, sort of owns this whole big bird cage, and lets us "soil" the news print on occasion!

By the way, chances are 100% the original battery is gone.

yeah, pretty sure that and the first spare I tested are done. I still have one more spare battery to test if this one doesn't get close to like-new. bummed that the first one is dead though, 17 cycles...what a waste =\
