t42 with banias dead TR451 possible?
Recent my T42 developed a random crash if I accidently tapped the upper right hand side of the case, this progressed to the point where it simply won't power up now. I stumbled upon this site and the tr451 which I'm very interested in. I also just obtained a T60 but surprisingly I'm not entirely impressed with it yes it's quite a bit more powerful, but for the most part the T40 series seemed to be a nice trade off of weight and size with power.
So with that I'm quite interested in trying to bring my T42 back to life, and it might apply this conversion to my wife's T43p (fan just died and was swapped with an extra).
The conversion actually looks fairly straight forward, but I want to make sure that I'm on the right track before ordering the parts.
The only thing different than the posts I've read is most of the tr451 conversions have been with the t41 or t40 series, I know that the motherboards are basically the same across the t4x series but I have the t42 series with the BANIAS 400/600/1500MHZ-1M:X86 MICROPROCESSOR listed, and a 14.1 inch screen. I would like to know if this will be able to be swapped to an R51 board? or if there is a specific board I need to look for, for this to work? Are there some R51/52 boards that I should specifically avoid or look for?
Thanks in advance.

The systemboard swap is no issue, but what is the resolution of your current LCD? It would need to be XGA (1024x768) to do the TR451 mod.
Re: t42 with banias dead TR451 possible?
Or get a R52 board with Intel GPU which will work with other screens. But it will need a different CPU and RAM than you are using now.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Re: t42 with banias dead TR451 possible?
Hmm lenovo lists the part number as 92P6726 which according to http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/IBM- ... P6726.aspx
is XGA in that resolution that you mentioned. So it looks ok there.
I believe my wife's t43p is a higher resolution screen so I might need to look into a R52 board there.
But right now with my t42 I guess I'm looking to get it running again, but I wouldn't mind a slight upgrade while I'm doing it. Any suggestions on any boards to stay away from or ones that would be a nice board to upgrade to? Any problems with the processor swapping across?
Thanks again

George is correct, again...
My T42 has a 15" SXGA+ and a R52 board. I had forgotten the discussion a couple of years ago about which boards would work with which displays. And the forum search function is worthless, it just says; "No posts were found because the word sxga+ is not contained in any post." Hah!

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Motherboard-IBM ... 3f08e2602d
This ebay seller used to sell brand new R51 intel gpu motherboards for $49.99 including shipping.
I have done two TR451 units with these boards and they worked just fine. If you have a T40, T41, or T42 you simply replace the board and everthing will work fine as long as you have the standard XGA (1024x768) screen. They will also support Windows 7 although the performance score is only 1.0 due to the video driver. Don't even bother to find a faster driver as it is not available. When finished you will have a rock solid ThinkPad. Good luck.

I'll take a look at them when I'm off from work (ebay blocked), should the processor I have swap across? I believe the memory might also be slightly different?

Processor is fine.

If you buy the new ATI board that is listed in the eBay link...it will work fine also with you processor and memory. You might contact the seller to see if he has any more of the Intel based motherboards for the R51. Either way he/she is a good seller. The products are new. I did use the service software to enter in the correct model and type...but not totally necessary.

In some of the posts that I've been reading it mentioned to stay with the intel GPU's in lieu of the ATI GPU's would there be a problem in going with this ATI board?

If you want an ATI-powered board, we have several freshly reballed boards coming in next week.
Because of this, these boards are as good as (if not better than) new boards.
We are also cheaper, at $70.- shipped. See The Board Room link in my signature.
