Clean XP sp2 install...audio and modem not found/installed

#1 Post by arrangeit » Sat Apr 16, 2011 2:17 pm

Wondering if anyone has a fix for this...my laptop is a T60 2007 model. Please note this is Service Pack 2 so the hotfix Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver (Q888111) for Windows XP with Service Pack 1 is not allowed to install by the installer package.

On a clean install from an XP Pro sp2 disk, the audio device and modem are not found and therefore are not and can not be installed. They do not show up in the Device Manager at all...even as unrecognized devices. Obviously if I then run the appropriate driver updates the driver finds no devices...so this is not a problem with the SoundMax or Modem drivers.

I noticed this problem cropped up earlier with XP and the above noted hotfix was issued...but the hotfix will not work with sp2 as the installer informs that the hotfix is unnecessary on sp2. Well...thanks for that bit of info...

I've installed XP on several other desktops and laptops from my disk without problems...never on a Thinkpad though.

For those wondering...I'm trying to get a very lean XP Pro install with as few additional programs/services/startup items as possible. Everything is dandy except for this particular glitch.

All suggestions and advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
arrangeit

Please see the solution in post #4...

Check for the missing drivers on the Lenovo website: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62928

Hello Guiness lover,

From that download site there is the hotfix download (Q8 88111) which sounds like the perfect antidote to this problem...however...it will not install if it detects sp2.

My (legal) XP disk is XP Pro sp2 but I'm wondering if this hotfix is not included with all versions of the XP disk...is that even possible?

Thanks for your response.

A solution for others that may encounter this problem...

The hotfix (Q888111) necessary for XP to recognize the audio device and modem will not install from Service Pack 2. If you have an SP2 disk, you will have to install SP3 in order for the OS to find them.

After installing SP3 the computer reboots...the Device manager will show these as unrecognized devices. Run the driver packages from the Lenovo site and you are good to go!

Cheers
