Gorilla glass or Multitouch X220 tablet?

#1 Post by tpdi » Sat Apr 23, 2011 5:44 am

I want to get an X220 tablet, even though I don't really have a need for a tablet. Years ago I had a palm pilot and I liked the touchscreen, so I figure, have some fun with this, get a tablet.

And I like the idea of the multitouch tablet that recognizes finger gestures on the screen. But how much will that degrade the image? Is multitouch on top of IPS going to cancel out the benefits of IPS?

Should I get the tablet multitouch, the tablet pen-only (with Gorilla glass), or just get a non-tablet X220?

Thanks.

On my multi-touch X201 tablet, the layers desaturate colors slightly and decrease viewing angles significantly (not color shifts, it just gets darker and harder to see at an angle). The top layer is glossy and there's a lot of glare, making the display virtually unreadable in sunlight.

I don't completely agree, I also have a X201T with multitouch, and while the top layer is a little glossy (let's say it's not fully matte), I can read it just fine in sunlight, given that brightness is at max. at least it's much easier to read then any other laptop I've seen.

I'm not trying to argue with you, but I use my X201 in a car stand and sunny weather pretty much overwhelms the screen. And that's inside the car. Forget reading the display in full sunlight. I think they had a daylight visible screen option; maybe that's what you have?

A co-worker has a X201 tablet multitouch. The coating on the screen does make it hard to read especially at an angle. The screen looks darker too. He regrets getting multitouch since most softwares don't support multitouch input. He usually uses it in pen input mode or his desktop.

For now go with gorilla glass and pen input. May be Win 8 will have a better multitouch support but that may take a while. May be Lenovo will learn from Apple iPad's multitouch screens so that IPS looks better with multitouch coating and also closer to the surface.

@oliver: no, I have the multitouch. however, I live in the netherlands, so I think I don't have much problems with direct sunlight 'cause direct sunlight isn't exactly strong here ;)

this should be the 'X Slate' mentioned in the PDF with the X1 presentation.

Maybe we'll need a new section in the forums.

I was told the gorilla glass was not going to be offered with the x220 tablet, so ended upgetting the multitouch. I really like it so far (got it three days ago). I mostly use touch for navigation and pen for notes and drawing.

Gorilla Glass is supposed to be available mid to late May. It's listed in the Lenovo Tablet Tech Spec PDF.

What software comes with the X220 that take advantage of the Multitouch? Can I use it to sign docs or PDFs?

Hi Owners, am planning to but X220 Tablet. please clear my below questions.

1 While ordering it online, i see "No web camera" as the option. How do i get the 720p web camera attached? Does it come by default ?
2 Should i need to include the Digitizer pen separately while purchasing, or will it come by default along with the tablet ?
3 Do i need to choose between Gorilla glass or Multitouch or can i have both? [ meaning i want to use multi touch and the digital pen as well ]
4 How good is the battery life with the normal 6 cell battery ? [ will this be extending outside the tablet space or is that the 9 cell battery ]

Thanks,
MVR

There is an option specify a web cam on the camera page of the customization menu for $30. Default is no web cam.

There is one included. You can get a spare one at extra cost.

Pen input only comes with gorilla glass. Multitouch doesn't. So you can't have multitouch with gorilla glass. Multitouch option will accept pen input.

Battery bulges out in the back for the 6 cell, I think. You should get about 5-6 hrs.

Thanks a lot sanjuro for the instant response :) ..

Am planning to go for the multi touch screen which can also take the pen input, keeping in mind that i can use win 8 from next year which will be customized for touch input.

Any idea on Win 8 Tablets ??
