AHCI and Windows 7

#1 Post by CeeDee » Tue Apr 26, 2011 6:14 pm

I have just realised that I am running my T60p in compatability mode instead of AHCI mode. I am runnin Windows 7 Pro. and when I try to switch over I get a BSOD. I thought this was only a problem with XP. Am I missing a driver? I went on the Lenovo site and did a search for AHCI Driver for T60p and got 0 response. My hard drive is an Hitachi 320 gig 7200 rpm.

Install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver, then boot into BIOS immediately. Change to AHCI then boot as normal.

Thanks for the response Harry. I downloaded the Matrix for T60 T60p for Window 7. Unfortunately it did not work because the file downloaded is not compatable with the components that I have in device manager as seen here:

Intel(R)ICH7-M Family Serial ATA Storage Controler - 27C4
Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA Controler

The File download is for:

15.Double-click either of the following devices.
◦Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
◦Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
◦Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
◦Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/M SATA RAID Controller
◦Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
◦Intel(R) ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2929
◦RAID Controller

So should I have one of the controlers listed?

What exactly did you download?
I believe you need this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-70477
(82801GBM is part of the ICH7 family)

Note that Intel refers to newer versions of this driver as "rapid storage technology" or RST instead of "matrix storage".

That looks close enough to me.

I am not running W7 on my T60P, so no help here. I'd select the 82801GBM driver though ...

@jdrou: Yes that was the file that I downloaded

@harryc: I will try selecting your suggestion in the morning.

I still think that it is strange that I don't have any of the controllers listed, though.

Well I think I have tried all of the drivers (including one direct from Intel) and it still does not work in AHCI mode. I tried Lenovo Update and it says everything is up todate, so I'm at a loss as far as what to try next. I'm sure I have read that there is a way of turning it on in the registry, but can't remember where I read it!
If anyone has any other ideas don't hesitate do suggest them.

AHCI and Windows 7

#8 Post by hunterman223 » Wed Apr 27, 2011 4:52 pm

Does the driver installation complete successfully? I ran into this issue not too long ago. For some reason I was throwing errors saying "not applicable" etc. I reinstalled instead of trying anything else to fix it, but I didn't have any critical programs or what not.

@hunterman223 When I tried to install the ones from Lenovo, it just comes back and says that I have the latest driver already installed. When I installed the one from Intel, it did complete succesfuly but nothing changed in device manager.

AHCI and Windows 7

In that case, have you tried installing in safe mode? If that doesn't work try removing the old drivers through the device manager, and then install.

Well I tried safe mode and deleting and re installling also picking from list and nothing worked, so I'm thinking of re loading Windows 7 as a last resort, but it will have to wait for a few days. In the mean time does amyone know how to fix this through the registry?

Take a look at this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976

Worked for me when I installed Win 7 in Compatibility Mode.
The AHCI drivers are disabled in the registry because AHCI was not active during the install.
X301 -- X201s -- X2faux1s -- X201 -- x230 -- T61 -- T60p -- T42p

Now that looks like a logical explanation to me. I will try it in the morning. Thank you.

Well I wasn't able to get it to work using the Microsoft "Fix It" method. So I am going to try one last thing before I abandon this whole idea, and that is to do a clean install onto a spare drive that I have. I will start the installation with the BIOS setting at AHCI and see what happens. It will have to wait until the weekend though. I will post my results on Monday.
