My X200s has been stolen ;( Some advice.

#1 Post by Jason404 » Tue Apr 26, 2011 7:59 pm

I lost my beautiful X200s when I mugged in London a few nights ago. It was not insured. I only recently added a Gobi 2000 WWAN/GPS card and SSD as well, so I am especially gutted. I would not be so bad if the crack addict who now has it was a ThinkPad enthusiast, but I doubt he will appreciate it as much as I did.

I had been meaning to activate the Intel vPro > Intel AMT > Intel Anti-Theft Technology thing, once I worked out what it does, but I never got around to it. Could anybody explain what I could have used it for, which would have helped me in this situation?

I had also been meaning to activate the Guest account and install Prey! I really wished I had now (my X200s even had GPS and webcam!), as getting that loser busted would be so satisfying. If I had, I am almost certain to have it back!

That sucks bigtime - I think the only thing you can do if you have not installed prey or computrace is give the serial number (you have it right?) to the police, and pray to your god/respective greater being that you get it back unharmed.

In terms of the anti-theft thing, that may be as much disabling the system if it is stolen - which works great if all you are worried about is the data on it, but if you want the system back, I don't know how much it would help (if someone has stolen a computer, and it does not work/requires a password, I can't see them spending much time on it).

I think all laptop owners wish for a system like this :D
Elitebook 8440p, i5 520, 8gb, Samsung 840 SSD
Old/Not Working/Dead Laptops:
T61 7661CC2, 4gb, Windows 7 x64, 240gb intel SSD, 500gb Ultrabay drive
Toshiba Portege 7020ct
Thinkpad T41 23737FU
Dell Latitude LS

Aw man, I am really sorry to hear about the loss of your Thinkpad.

I don't have any answers for you on tracing the machine. Maybe you can check local pawn shops. Did you have proof of purchase and the serial #? I ask because it will probably be pawned for drug money.

Hopefully you had your data backed up.
