I have read that 1,7GHz Banias would be the fastest CPU for R40 what BIOS accepts?

R40 max memory and best WLAN ad CPU?
That's correct.jiopsi wrote:I have read that 1,7GHz Banias would be the fastest CPU for R40 what BIOS accepts?
I had this adapter:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/IBM_11a/b ... CI_Adapter
It was reliable and supported WPA2, which is a must have. The newer intel cards are better, not sure about the older ones. I would go with the 2200bg as RBS said, unless you can't find it get the atheros Iisted.

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN ad CPU?
I've had great experiences with IBM (atheros-chipped) abg wireless cards in R40. Intel 2200BG will work fine as well, but with "1802 error" which is easy to remove.
That type of board will not go above 1.7 Banias, which might prove to be quite hot, and there's no fan upgrade available for R4x generation.

If it were a Pentium 4 board then yes. You can not install a P4 in a Pentium M board.RealBlackStuff wrote: Crap. Don't you read the link I gave you?

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN ad CPU?
Ordered 1,7GHz Banias, and will try to find 2200BG WLAN. Does anyone know what kind of DDR memory this takes? It has now PC2100 DDR266, would it take DDR333 or DDR400? Can it run those lower clocks?

Supposedly it is backwards compatible, but not in all cases. Some bios's have issues recognising the faster ram, even though their should be no issue. I recommend just getting the 266, you can get 2GB for about $60 shipped on eBay. Search "2gb Pc 2100 sodimm" or 1GB respectively. May I ask what price you got the CPU for? To me it seems like a lot of money to spend on an 8 year old laptop.jiopsi wrote:Ordered 1,7GHz Banias, and will try to find 2200BG WLAN. Does anyone know what kind of DDR memory this takes? IBM's webpage for R40 says:

Intel Mobile Pentium 4 at 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 2.2 or 2.4GHz

That's what they were originally offered with, but they support a Pentium M up to 1.7Ghz, no more no less.RealBlackStuff wrote:IBM's webpage for R40 says:

And like I said before, there were different motherboards for P4 and PM chips, so it is not possible to mix the 2. Also, PM models support 2GB of memory while the Pentium 4 models only supported 1GB.

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN ad CPU?
Like ajk66, I prefer the Atheros cards.
As an experiment I took multiple Atheros and Intel cards in 2 identical T30's, and even went so far as to swap them between the machines. The Atheros always stayed connected better. That's not a strictly scientific term, that's just walking around a single house, with a single WAP.
With that said, to use the Centrino feature, you must use the Intel card.

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN ad CPU?
Ok, I will try to find DDR266. 1,7GHz Banias did cost about 9€ which is about 13$ shipped from Ebay. So not so much.hunterman223 wrote:Supposedly it is backwards compatible, but not in all cases. EDIT: Also got 2GB (2x1GB) of Kingston DDR333 about 18€ (26$) from Internet. Hope it works. Original was 2x 256MB DDR266.

The Banias was in UK eBay, it was only one. Was not going to replace it, until I suddenly came by the offer. The memory is from a dude in Finlands largest computer community: http://murobbs.plaza.fi/.hunterman223 wrote:Wow, i take it back. Where are you finding these deals? I was on eBay US.

That machine will work fine with both PC2700 and PC2100, I've used both in the past.
It will always run at PC2100 speeds, though.

So it would seem! I guess you have to take "official IBM spec sheets" with a heap of salt.

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN and CPU?
I guess that they (IBM) were just being cautious regarding any liability for users installing stuff that wasn't factory-tested at the time...but this forum is chuck full of people running A31/p, R40 and T30 units with 2GB RAM, large hard drives and faster CPUs than originally prescribed...
...and that's just the beginning...

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN and CPU?
Don't wanna start a new thread since my question's half-answered...
New R40, first one I've ever owned, model 2681-cto... CPUID says it has a i845d chipset and a northwood-core celeron 2.0ghz. So, I take it I've got one of the P4 systems.
...Spent all morning trying to get it to accept a 1.5 banias to no avail - A lot of what I'd found online said that it should be possible, but a bit more digging says this board is stuck with P4-core celerons and no pentium-M's.
Am I correct in this? I really just want a PM in it for now so it'll run cooler, but I guess I'm stuck with P4's... This is only going to be a beater laptop til the new t43 is finished, then I plan on putting it back up on ebay, so I'm not planning on going overboard with experimentation.

Re: R40 max memory and best WLAN and CPU?
R40 had two separate types of boards, one for P4M and the other for PM so you're stuck with P4M if your machine had a Celeron...
