Suggestions for IPS flat panel monitor to go with TP?
Suggestions for IPS flat panel monitor to go with TP?
I'm looking for a nice flat panel monitor for my desk. I'm used to the 4:3 IPS panel on the TP, so I figure that would be the best choice for me. I pretty much want to duplicate the TP panel, just bigger and brighter. Wondering what you all use/recommend and if anyone has any suggestions as to where to get one for a good price? The Dell 2007FP appears to fit the bill but it seems that some of them were not IPS??? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I'm also a fan of 4:3 on laptops but I think widescreen makes sense on a large monitor. The problem with laptops is that widescreen takes away vertical resolution while not giving anything in return. On an external monitor, you can get a comfortable 1200 and you get 1920 instead of 1600 of horizontal resolution. And with 24" you can also start thinking about human eye's field of view (which is wide, not tall).mbarker wrote:Requirements:[/b]

I have a HP ZR24w eIPS which I'm very satisfied with. I'm thinking of getting another one for even more work space.

Re: Suggestions for IPS flat panel monitor to go with TP?
For desktop monitors, IPS panels tend to look very grainy, and many have uneven colors, e.g. areas that are redder or greener. For these reasons, I actually prefer PVA, and the Dell 2007FP is a very good PVA monitor. If you don't mind something older, the 2001FP is IPS. I had a 2001FP for a short while and preferred the 2007FP, which is sharper and has a higher contrast.

Re: Suggestions for IPS flat panel monitor to go with TP?
I've been reading about the 2007FP and have sort of come to the same conclusion (that the PVA is apparently quite OK). I think it would be the best unit for my purposes......now where to get one? Any suggestions? I see that people used to pick these up from Dell (second-hand, I assume) for around $90. I can't find current prices even close to that.....pianowizard wrote:For desktop monitors, IPS panels tend to look very grainy, and many have uneven colors, e.g. areas that are redder or greener. 2007FP is 6.9 kg. Too heavy for carrying it around.

Re: Suggestions for IPS flat panel monitor to go with TP?
Any more ideas for a "monitor on the go"?
I think it should have at least this features:
- larger panel than the notebook one
- better panel: IPS, VA
- rather light
- easy to connect. This is more an option, it would be nicer to have a displayport connector than a rgb or dvi one

Mbarker,
This: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEC-MultiSync-LCD20 ... 33670f9f0e
Much better than what you were considering, especially if it features the A-TW polarizer. If you want to go widescreen, the LCD2490WUXI I can personally recommend the LCD2490WUXI (not WUXI2) which also features the A-TW polarizer. The displays are of a slightly older generation, when LG did not use such harsh AG coatings as they do today and when they offered to install NECs own A-TW polarization filter. Otherwise, the LCD2190UXI features NECs own panels (SA-SFT) which are also good, feature the A-TW polarizer, but it is extremely hard to find.
ssd_thinkpad,
Keep an eye out for http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?su ... 1305026187 . This is probably as small/transportable as it gets. Offers one displayport.

Most interesting! But I wouldn't want to lug around such a thin monitor very often, because it can get damaged easily.Troels wrote:Keep an eye out for http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?su ... 1305026187 . This is probably as small/transportable as it gets. Offers one displayport.

Nice one with a VA panel. And very cheap. It weights 3,3 kg which is more than 1 kg less than my 19 inch VA EIZO. With 250 USD it is what I will buy.Troels wrote:Keep an eye out for http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?su ... 1305026187 . This is probably as small/transportable as it gets. I have found another one, the LG 15EL9500, it is only 15 inch widescreen 16:9 and low resolution so it's only useable for people who want a bigger font. It is OLED and has a native black level. Which means unlimited contrast. I'd just take it for fun, but the 950 euros are not cheap, too.

Re: Suggestions for IPS flat panel monitor to go with TP?
Just saw this posted yesterday: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1608340 . P-IPS seems to be more like a marketing term.Puppy wrote:[...] but I haven't seen recent P-IPS yet.
You're right about the backlight uniformity compensation - it also fixes color tints. I have a tiny amount of red tint on the rightmost part of the screen, and it's completely fixed by setting the color comp at level 1. If the 2090UXi starts at about 40 cd/m2 with brightness setting set to 0, then that's definitely a plus. The 2490 is about 140 cd/m2 at its minimum setting (without using panel blocking).
That's actually a good price... on Amazon it seems to sell for about £1,300 i.e. €1,500! But yeah, before jumping on the expensive OLED bandwagon, it would be nice to know more about it's long-term performance, especially regarding burn-in.ssd_thinkpad wrote:I have found another one, the LG 15EL9500, it is only 15 inch widescreen 16:9 and low resolution so it's only useable for people who want a bigger font.
