trying to bring T43 back to UN Mission & seek tech advic

#1 Post by intprosecutor » Sat Mar 26, 2005 10:03 am

I am trying to find quickly a T43 (my 4th TPad) to bring back to the UN Mission, so need to find and get shipped to my Wash DC place by 5 April flyout date. IF no "qualified" T43 available then will need one in early April and have it shipped to the Mission DHL/Fedex/UPS.

For word processing, multi-windows, some excel, and DVD at night, thought 15", 80GB HD, want the 533 sidebus and the Express cards, and 1GB SDRAM, fingerprint reader needed for security...:

What model available NOW? I loved the 2687D5U but understand not available until June?

Questions:
1. For my use will 80GB 5400 be signif. different than 60GB 7200? I think not.

2. For DVD movie viewing quality, will 1400x1050 be significantly and visibly less quality than 1600x1200? help me with this...I had a UXGA screen before. I am not a gamer.

3. For DVD movie, will 64MB of video memory be OK? X300 or higher OK?

4. Do the T42ps have the express slots, or 533?

5. Figured that M750 and above fine...

Love the keyboard, I pound it hard. Love the IBM, since my first 700 in I think 1993? Been from Pakistan to Tanzania to Yemen to now Kosovo with it...

Guess I am asking about the tech aspects but will take any suggestions on where to buy, including Bill, although need someone who can ship to me DHL/Fedex/UPS if not able to get what I want on 5 April...

Thanks, Mike

Bill Ithink can send it to you however you want =) so if T43ps aren't out then Bills a great option. Even if not because he can pick ou a Thinkpad that's "perfect" without deadpixles etc.

So many questions so little answers:

>Questions: 1. For my use will 80GB 5400 be signif. different than 60GB 7200? I think not.

Correct. Greater arial density of the 80GB helps offset the increased RPM.

> 2. For DVD movie viewing quality, will 1400x1050 be significantly and visibly less quality than 1600x1200?

No better. DVDs are encoded at 720xsomething . You are already stretching to meet the 1400x1050 screen. Only difference on DVDs would be if you got a widescreen laptop.. If you want your laptop to last for more than one movie before dying you might consider a 14" non-flexview model. OR get DVDSHRINK and rip DVDs to your hard drive. HD should take less energy than the DVD player.

> 3. For DVD movie, will 64MB of video memory be OK? X300 or higher OK?

Yes. Even Intel graphics would be ok for DVD movies. My wife is watching DVDs fine on a 600mhz P3 laptop with 16mb of graphics memory.

4. Do the T42ps have the express slots, or 533?

No T42ps do not have the expresscard slot. Only the R52, T43, and T43Ps. Not many expresscards are available now but in theory could be really usefull in the future.

For availability call Bill, but if he can't help you call IBM directly. They should be able to let you know what they have instock NOW to help you out.

If IBM gives you no joy you might look at alternatives. I've had good experience with some of the Dell Latitudes ... took one to SWA with me and it held up fine.

Finally found this. I wish they would sticky this thread:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=7436

It's by a member going by dfumento that did a great job listing all the way to buy thinkpads from IBM.

Follow this link:

http://www-1.ibm.com/shop/pc/personalpa ... ookie=true

"then Thinkpad Notebooks link, then select "All products" from the first drop down box. "

Now those are educational discount prices so disregard, BUT the site lists which models are "in stock" which is what you are looking for. Again call IBM to verify what they can get you by April 15. Suposedly "in stock" ships from the U.S. anything else ships from overseas and is in danger of getting held up in customs.

Also, for availability from 3rd parties, check out www.pricegrabber.com, they list availability in addtion to the prices from 3rd parties (call to verify though, some are listing T43P as "instock" but probably just trying to get your business..

Good luck preparing for your trip!

Difference between T43 and T43p???

#9 Post by intprosecutor » Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:59 am

Thanks for the tips, especially Trickster. I will go with Bill. It seems that I can go with a 1400/1050 screen and still it will be OK for word processing/DVD viewing. BUT:

1. So what is difference between T43 and T43p, other than allows screen to be UXGA? T43 has the 533 bus, the Express card slot, FPrint reader, etc? I will go with 80GB 5400rpm...want M760 but M750 OK I guess for my needs...

2. Will ask Bill -- can I get this immediately or by delivery (to DC) on 5 April?

Any other advice on getting T43? After Bill I was thinking Euclid and then others...

Mike (now in Kosovo -- flying to DC on 1 April...)
