A31P and Windows 7 (Pro/32bit)

#1 Post by friedrich-eugen » Sun May 01, 2011 3:50 pm

Hello,

has anyone tried to have an A31P (P4M 2,5 oder 2,6Ghz, 2GB Memory, large harddisk) run Windows 7 Professional (final Version)? By Run I do think of loading it with office 2007 (no Access), Adobe, Explorer 9 and Use as Homeoffice machine for older children at school ("Gymnasium" over here in Germany) or else at college?

I remember positive notes that I do note find anymore. I did once a preview install myself on an A31P and it did work, but it was not flawless (preview)...

My daughters like their A31Ps very much, but I feel servicing these machines becomes difficult, as Windows XP is aging, the pure load of patches, the system carries, slows down. So I am tempted to try Windows 7 on those Notebooks, to keep them alive for them for a couple (2?) of Years , still.

Any hints or experiences to share ?

I find the lack of *proper* graphics driver extremely troubling.

Apart from that, it runs OK, but I'm staying with XP and Linux on my A31p.

thanks ajkua66,

I remember that point. But - I think - I've also read of drivers found to work for an A31P with Windows 7 properly?!

I'll look out and try, when I've managed to finish the two X60ties for my twins ....

My definiton of "working properly" would mean "as well or better than XP" and I had no such luck...

YMMV.

A31P and Windows 7 (Pro/32bit)

I would stay with XP. You will find it way faster than Windows 7 on an older machine, and if you commit to W7 you will be stepping over the threshold into absolute driver hell.

If you really want to give it a shot, keep the windows xp installation and set up a dual boot. Here is a good guide.

If I were you, I would stay with XP or Linux.
