Drivers and Software for a T400 W7

#1 Post by hunterman223 » Mon May 02, 2011 8:38 am

What is the best setup for a clean install of Windows 7 on a T400? So far I plan on running Lenovo System Update and then installing all other drivers not covered.

As far as ThinkVantage software goes what do I need? Definitely the power manager since I've used it before. Do I need Client Security Solution to login with the fingerprint reader? Or does the FPR software itself provide that functionality?

People may answer that differently. Personally, I only use Power Manager, Hotkey and Drive Protection. If you use your Thinkpad on multiple networks using different logins, you may want Access Connection while I just use the Windows utility. It's probably best to learn what they are and do, then decide whether it's right for you.

CSS is not needed for the fingerprint to work, but the fingerprint software is.

Is the rest of it just bloatware then? Just to be clear, the fingerprint software alone will allow me to login to windows with the fingerprint reader? Or do I need CSS? Does CSS do anything else of importance?

CSS is unnecessary unless you want to use the FPR to login to sites in a browser.
I've heard that you can get Windows to work with it directly instead of going through the Lenovo tool. Don't think you get one-swipe login that way though.

The switchable drivers are required. I think you also need the Integrated Camera driver if you have the webcam. The UltraNav drivers are also needed if you want the TrackPoint scroll to work. I think that's about it.

I won't worry about CSS then. Is that really all I need as far as drivers? I was thinking I needed all of it, chipset, intel matrix, audio, basically everything on the driver matrix. Does windows 7 install all of that automatically?

I think Windows 7 installs generic ones for most of them, and an antiquated version of the Power Management driver.

Thanks. For the most part I'll play it by ear then. Do you know which packages I need to get GPS functionality? I don't care about WWAN, I just need the driver to use with some kind if navigation program. There are 2 listed, "ThinkPad Mobile Broadband" and "Verizon Wireless WAN (UNDP)".
