T2390 CPU in T43p?

#1 Post by lukee » Mon May 02, 2011 11:40 am

Hello, I got a chance to buy Intel Core Duo CPU 1.83GHz. Can it work in T43p? I've performed comparsion of the current CPU (P-M 770) with this T2390 and major parameters seem to be same for both:

FSB: 533 MHz
Package size: 35 x 35 mm
Socket type: PPGA478

Here is detailed comparsion of both CPUs:
http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=27597,35153,

Only thing where I have a concerns would be chipset/BIOS incompatibility :?
Current: T420
Previous: T400, T43p Flexview, T40, R52, T43p 14"
My first ThinkPad was 570

It'll fit, but won't work.

Just curious, while it shouldn't work on paper, has anyone tried it?

The chipset in T43/p does not support dual cores...end of story.

Understood, but a lot of technical documents claim things do not support them when in fact at the time of writing the unsupported thing had not yet been conceptualized... My old P965-equipped desktop computer is not supposed to recognize LGA775 CPUs with a 1333mhz FSB, yet it does.

Desktops are - and have ALWAYS been - far more upgradeable than laptops...

Ok, sure, but the point still stands. I have an old PowerBook G3 where the max ram is 384MB - it happily will accept 512MB without any limitations.

While it's not supposed to be supported it would be an interesting thing to try for the sake of trying. Hell, if I get my hands on the CPU I'll put it in myself.

Even if the chip set compatibility wasn't an issue, the T2390 has a completely different pinout to the Pentium M.
