Anyone ever use IBM USB Integrated Keyboard # 40K5372?

#1 Post by mbarker » Mon May 02, 2011 2:11 pm

Title pretty much says it all. I'm looking to put together a home desktop setup.....didn't know these existed until today. It is basically a USB Thinkpad keyboard. Anyone use one? Do they feel good? Do you like them?

I've used nothing but Thinkpads (and I mean NOTHING) for over 10 years......looks like this could be a neat toy for me. Awful expensive though.

Comments?

thanks

I couldnt find much on the one you mentioned.

It seems like this one would be better since it's based off of the older ThinkPad keyboards. It might be harder to find though.

Otherwise this one, which looks like a T410 keyboard.

I imagine they are similar to their ThinkPad models, so I would try and find the first one.

Yes, sort of.

I've used the old external UltraNav keyboard which is basically just a T4x keyboard in an external enclosure (i.e. the tenkeyless equivalent of the keyboard you're looking at.)

It's not bad. A good mechanical keyboard is vastly better IMO, but it's not bad when compared to most of the common rubber dome junk.

I love the Ultranav keyboards. I wish I could buy one more now. :)

I have a slightly older (than that one) UltraNav with the numeric pad. It was a gift from my office because they were going batty listening to me typing on my M2 with the pointing stick.

Personally, I very much prefer the M2. The UltraNav isn't bad, and it is very good at keeping people away from my workstation since they can't find the mouse :) However it didn't seem to have the same build quality as a thinkpad keyboard - either the one on my current T510, or my previous R32. It has the shiny keys now from the finish wearing off of every single key. The matte finish on the wrist wrest eventually wore off, too.

Worst of all, though, is the spring under the left mouse button for the pointing stick has broken (or slipped out of place). Now the button doesn't come up properly, though it does work. Result is that button now has an awful spongy feel to it. I have to use the left button under the touchpad to get good tactile response, but that only works if I have the touchpad set to on.

Since I can't find replacement parts for it for anything, I'm not about to take it apart to try to fix the button problem. On the other hand, I did use it for a few years before the button problem came up, and I use it a lot.
