Help! My R61 display shows only junk...

#1 Post by psorrentino » Mon May 02, 2011 4:31 pm

I love this computer and really can't afford another like one right now and my warranty is 5 months past. R61 (8919-22U) but with 3GB, Window 7 64-bit. The screen (15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M) is displaying noise. The following picture is what I see: http://www.sebosis.com/members/peter/pics/DSCF1100.JPG
When I display to a monitor (I used my TV) I get the following: http://www.sebosis.com/members/peter/pics/DSCF1098.JPG
I put up the high res pics thinking the detail might be helpful in diagnosis.

I run through this, but ti can not recover. When I run the diag, which it offers after this fails, everything checks out okay.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there something else I could tell people to help more? Thanks.

Please take the pictures out of the post. Links would be better, as we don't need to see them to identify the problem. Your GPU has failed (some say that ALL of the nVidia chips in these ThinkPads are defective), and there is little hope of repair, other than replacing the motherboard. See this thread:

The person that said the gpus wont be fixed with reballing was wrong. I have repaired several of the HPs with the same issues, reflowing them following the same guide as for the t40 and similar models brings them back to life. the hp tx1000 shows the EXACT symptoms all the way down to the dashes all over the external screen, reflow fixes it. at least try it before replacing the motherboard.
