T61 - Windows 7, New WiFi, & Access Connections

#1 Post by danf100 » Mon May 02, 2011 4:58 pm

Running W7 and the latest version of Access Connections (AC) and I had a 4965AG WiFi card in the machine; a friend gave me their old 4965AGN (notice the N added) card which has better reported through-put. Anyway, shut down the T61, swapped out the card, powered on, AC found it, but now any profile that had the old AG card is greyed out and when you try to edit it, AC says that the old AG hardware is not found and you cannot look at any of the wireless parameters associated with that profile.

Is there a way to have AC "discover" the new H/W and substitute the AGN card for the AG card? Else, in order to get some of the WPA codes, I'll have to swap back to the AG card so that AC will let me see the key information in the profiles.

I was hoping that AC would be more forgiving, but apparently not.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest removing AC and let Windows 7 manage your wifi. You can always reinstall AC after Windows 7 finds your new card...but life always seems a little better without AC for me.

I personally like what Access Connections does, especially since I roam to all sorts of different networks on a regular basis (IT consultant) and also need to statically configure ethernet for various subnets in order to pre-configure network devices and so on all the time.

But I was just thinking about this bugaboo the other day, since I want to change my T400's WiFi NIC to a higher model, as you did, but worried that it would disable all the previous profiles. What makes matters worse is that IIRC, even if you export/re-import the profiles to a new installation, they won't "take" to a different NIC part.

I've noticed that problem for years, but was hoping that they finally eliminated that stupid problem in the newest versions. Guess not. :(
