If it does degrade, is there ANY way to prevent that? Raise your hand if you, too, hate the fragility of current batteries...

it will degrade the day it was made....the current technology, there is no way to stop it...the only way is to improve power usage of the laptop to maximize the power life.

I hate it too, but in the future, technology will allow a single charge to last at least 8 hours...that's what i heard from reading about napa or whatever is coming after sonama

If it's an extra battery that you are storing, store it in the fridge, at 50% charge. It should be stored in a sealed plastic bag that contains a desiccant (available at any hardware store).

Yeah, I ordered 2 batteries with my t42. Since I very rarely use the second one, I wish I knew about the dissipation rate issue before I bought (and I wish I knew newegg sold them for much cheaper than IBM) :)

For that reason

For that exact reason, it is better not to buy a second battery (unless you really need to) but wait till the primary battery's performance degrades then replace it with a new one at a later date. Don't purchase another battery as yet. Make the most use of the battery that came with your laptop first. This way you don't have to maintain the secondary battery which, in most cases, is not utilized that often.
