FAN ERROR on startup... with a twist

#1 Post by db130 » Tue May 17, 2011 4:01 pm

my T40 had a used long fan from a T43 until very recently when I got the FAN ERROR message on startup. I removed the long fan and replaced it with the original T40's short fan. All was well.

I then replaced the fan with a new replacement on ebay

popped off the defective fan from the long fan, popped in the new fan-equipped long fan back in my T40. All seemed well.

When I turned the laptop on the next day, I got the FAN ERROR message again. Thinking that the new fan died after one day, I put the short fan back in. The short fan won't turn on either. It appears that the fan connector on the motherboard is not delivering power? Has anyone else dealt with this?

You might have blown a fuse (F4). It is a tiny fuse near the lower right corner of the fan. The bad news is it is soldered to the motherboard and hard to change without a rework station

thank you for the info... i bought the T40 used more than 4 years ago and used it daily(i suppose i got my money's worth). i just upgraded to a nice 15" flexview T60. I might buy a barebones T40 down the road and swap the parts over.

I apologize for the old thread revival, but I just brought my T40 back to life using a brand new NOS motherboard from an ebay vendor(who appears to have more than one remaining).

The FRU is 39T5430 so essentially a drop-in replacement except it now has gigabit ethernet. Get this, it was $25.06 with shipping! I have no affiliation with the seller other than being a satisfied customer.

ebay vendor is mpp999, item #390486679448

That FRU is a factory-refurbished motherboard, not a new one (but probably just as good).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
