Computer Freezes when monitor moves

#1 Post by burnm3w1thf1r3 » Tue May 17, 2011 10:47 pm

I'm fixing a comptuer for a buddy of mine it is a IBM ThinkPad 2374 I believe that is a T40 series from my research. Any ways, he said after being on it a while the computer will lock up and he'll have to hard shut down. Or if the monitor gets bumped it locks up immediately and will not unfreeze. I disassembled the laptop and nothing looks out of order. Any ideas on what to look for or what to try?

Does it have discrete ATI graphics?

no idea about the graphics. But i turned it on and it didn't lock up until the computer got heated after being on for a while. So I'm assuming its a hardware issue, maybe a gpu cooling problem?

Welcome to the forum. This is about a T40 laptop, not a T400 - this is in the wrong forum. Hopefully a mod can move it to the proper forum. You have the classic loose gpu issue, which can only be fixed by reflowing/reballing the gpu. You are looking at the board room (listed in the adds above the forum), to get a replacement board. Everything is outlined on the site, you should be able to get it working fairly quickly, cheaply and easily.

You have either a loose GPU or a loose Southbridge chip.
T40/T41/T42 machines all behave in very similar ways when they go wrong, so do not just check for T40.

If you remove the RAM lid and module at the bottom of the laptop, you will find the FRU or P/N of that mobo on a small white label.
Check that against for availability here: http://theboardroom.info/stock.htm
Also check http://theboardroom.info/services.htm to see if your mobo qualifies for an exchange.

I'm pretty sure its probably past due for an exchange. The Manufacturer date is 2006. However I already had this thing apart, is there anyway I can just "tighten" the chips? I have SOME background knowledge of soldering. If its possible, would anyone know of a guide on how to solder the chip, as in the placement and what not or if there is a simpler way (i didn't take notice to if there are heatsinks with screws holding them down, cuz I'll just tighten them). Thank you.

The DIY and professional fix are discussed in the first two or three sticky threads at the top of this section of the forum.

All T40's were made in 2003. The sticker probably says "03/06", which actually means June of 2003. Sell it for parts on Craigslist for $20 to $30, and replace it with a more modern laptop.
