T60 on battery in ubuntu 10.10. Hissing sound in display

#1 Post by garnet » Wed May 18, 2011 10:14 am

Hi
running my t60 in ubuntu 10.10 on battery results is a very loud hissing (electronics humming) sound. It comes from the display. I am not sure is it the lamp or converter or whatever.
In win xp this is not happening.
Any ideas.
Full specs in sig.

Come on guys, havent anyone experienced something like this.
Just my wild guess - could it be something to do with the ATI drivers in Ubuntu? I heard Ubuntu uses its own ATI drivers, not ATI made ones.
If so, how can I update the driver to may be thr ATI made one?
Thanks

This obviously is an Ubuntu problem, not a T6x problem.
Wrong forum.

It is a t60. Anyway, could you please move it to Ubuntu forum here?
Thanks.

Are you sure it comes from the display? Most people have reported issues with certain power states for the CPU and high pitched noise (caused by inductors). Some suggestions and workarounds have been posted at http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... tch_noises which may or may not be of any help. The reason why I would think it has something to do with CPU power states is due to the fact that it runs on battery, which should put it into a power save mode.

Of course, when running in battery mode, the display may also dim down a notch in order to save power, so if the noise comes from the display, it would come from the inverter. But if you attach the AC adaptor and dim the light by Fn+End and it doesn't emit any noise, it is not the inverter coil emitting the noise.

I would think that Ubuntu uses the radeonhd driver and definitely not the fglrx driver. The performance and stability of the latter was so-so. Try this guide, if you want to give fglrx a try: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI .
