Best possible processor for t43

#1 Post by Whisky » Thu May 19, 2011 6:29 am

Hi,

I'm planning to upgrade my t43's processor to something better. So what is the best processor supported by the t43? I tried searching, but didn't find any information about the motherboard's socket.

Thanks in advance.

That would be the 2.26ghz m780 Sonoma Pentium M. Careful what you wish for though. The Sonoma Pentium Ms are know to run pretty hot, particularly the higher ghz models, and as a result, the fan can be pretty noisy.

Before upgrading your processor, you should seriously consider if it was not a MUCH better option to upgrade your HDD to a SDD, as this will no doubt give your T43 a much more dailyday "snappy" behaviour compared to upgrading your CPU. Try search this forum for .g. "T43 + SSD" or "ide sata adapter" and see what comes up. The forum.thinkpads.com search script by forum moderator HarryC will serve you well in this project. You may also be interested in browsing from this post and onwards. Beware of the (infamous!) "2010-issue" with non-IBM drives in e.g. T43 ThinkPad's (more info about this in the sticky Problems with non-thinkpad option drives on T43 thinkpads).

Solution to this potential issue? Install Notebook Hardware Control and undervolt the CPU to the maximum extent. Set CPU speed to "dynamic switching" to run on lowest clock when idle. Result? Much less power consumption, much less heat dissipation, much less "fan on" time. Also, see the sticky Thinkpad Fan Noise Problem: Light at the End of the Tunnel and get/install the ThinkPad fan control (TFC) program, ogiginally developed by member Shimodax and maintained and upgraded by member troubadix - get TPC here.
