r40 died MB & hard drive Qs update on laptop death

#1 Post by jpapier » Thu May 19, 2011 3:54 pm

No POST and only beeps with Cmos battery attached, so must be good and dead. 2681-FFU 14" 2-1GB pc2700 crucial memory, Fujitsu 40GB hard drive, WiFi. Do the 15" and 14" motherboards cross over? Built by Acer do they require an IBM hard drive?

Had some problems with freeze ups, did recovery from partition, another couple freeze ups and final may do damage to windows shut down screen.

Better question, is it worth the repair or would a T30 be a better replacement?

edit: after a MB/CPU replacement with my old components I started replacing them with my upgrades. When the over-priced Crucial 1GB sticks went in I got a freeze up. Apparently one bad stick PC2700S-2533-1-Z 1GB, DDR, 333, CL2.5 is the cause of all my problems.

The area where R40 wins over T30 is the fact that it has USB 2.0 as opposed to 1.1

Both of these are very old, as you know yourself...so being "better off" with one over the other is a fair game...

As for the motherboards, some came with FireWire while others did not. Also bear in mind that there are different boards for Pentium 4M and Pentium M which were both available for this generation...

Any 2,5"/9.5mm IDE/ATA laptop hard drive will work, regardless of manufacturer.

Good luck.

You mean I have been putting up with that clicking, loudly whirring 40GB drive for nothing? Guess I will have a use for that 60GB seagate. Another MB and CPU, check all the connections, redue the thermal paste. Is there a utility to set the R40 cooling fan on low all the time?

edit: WOW After finding my small screw driver set I started disassembly. There is no trace of thermal compound between the CPU and fan. Just gobs of melted solder to the side of the SL6Fk 2000/512, it is burnt.

I'm pretty sure I have an "as-new" fan for R40, and I most definitely have a CPU.

PM me if you end up needing any of those.

Good luck.
