Can short cooling fan work in place of long?

#1 Post by davissm » Fri May 20, 2011 3:07 pm

I'm working on a T42P with a cooling fan error. I ordered a cooling fan before tearing into the laptop when I realized the laptop uses a "long" fan while I ordered a "short" one. After removing the long fan, I decided to install the short fan just to see if the system would boot. Sure enough, it works fine. So I'm wondering, is it feasible for the system to function under reasonable conditions using a short fan? Thanks!

Hi,

It will work fine for as long as you don't use a graphics intensive application such as a 3D game or a video accelerated movie. Then the risk of burning the GPU will be very high. Note that the GPU is soldered, so if it overheats and breaks, it will be mainboard replacement time.
Quick summary : absolutely not recommended.

Thank you FTC...that's what I kind of thought. I appreciate the confirmation ;-)

Best,
Steve
