What happens to Active HDD Protection System after replacing

#1 Post by sonoma » Mon Mar 28, 2005 4:28 pm

Just wondering if the sensor for the Active Protection System is attached to the actual hard drive or to T43. Thinking of replacing my 40GB 5400rpm hard drive with 60GB 7200rpm.

If I did this, would I be able to continue to use the Active Protection System feature?

Also, I noticed an interesting thing yesterday in Control Panel's Add/Remove applet. There was a SW called IBM SATA Power Management Driver. Wondering if T43 was indeed capable of running a SATA drive.

Earlier when I posted this question, someone advised me that only PATA drives could be installed on T43. Not sure this is really true or not. I hope not.

The APS sensor is on the motherboard - when it detects motion, it sends a command to (any) hard drive to park the head and spin down.

Kenn's right that any HDD compatible with fitting in the socket will work with the APS system.

Does SATA stand for Serial ATA?

Thanks, Kenn. I know our newer ThinkCentre desktops can sometimes come with SATA hard drives, but no clue on support for them in the ThinkPad.
