Upgrading to Windows XP from 2000 Pro

#1 Post by teamdaddy » Mon Mar 28, 2005 5:10 pm

Hi everyone. I have just recently ordered a used IBM T23 (1.13 ghz, 128mb SDRAM, 30GB HDD) Thinkpad that will come loaded with Windows 2000 PRO. I was wondering whether or not it would be advantageous to upgrade to XP Pro, and how much trouble it would be to do so? Is this something I could do myself? I'm sure there may be other questions I need to answer first, so I look forward to your comments.

Whoops! I may have posted this in the wrong forum. If I did, my apologies. Mr Moderator, if necessary, would you please move to the appropriate forum.

It's a T so it's not necessarily in the wrong place. Windows 2000 works well, and on that system with another 128Mb of ram will perform admirably. It is on its way out in terms of support.

If I were you, I would consider the following before you put any data on the system:
1. Upgrade the hard drive to a 60Gb 72000 rpm drive. Much faster.
2. Put another 128Mb of ram in it.
3. Upgrade it to Windows XP Pro.
4. Enter the model number into the support site
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
and download all the current drivers for that model.

I had a T23 1.13GHz machine (2647-8NU) that came preloaded with XP Pro on the 30Gb drive. It performed very well, and it still working for the person I sold it to.

While I would install XP Pro, I would definitely NOT do an upgrade install. Do yourself a favor, wipe the drive and do a clean installation of ANY operating system you may want to run, upgrades are always trouble.

Asiafish is correct. It is what I meant and should have stated more directly. Always install fresh. Thank you, Asiafish. ... JD Hurst

Definitely do a fresh full install instead of upgrade from one OS to another. It will be more stable that way.

The minimum amount of RAM you want to have is 256MB. Otherwise with few applications open it will start using virtual memory and it will run annoyingly slow.

If I may ask one more question related to this, I went on-line to several different stores to check the price of the Windows XP software. I noticed that there are two different prices, one is for what some referred as "OEM" software which ran around $450.00 or thereabouts  , and the other just said "Windows XP Pro W/sp2. This one ran around 125.00 :) . Why the big difference in price? Can I get by with the cheaper price, or am I looking at forking over some mighty big bucks for this install? Thanks again everyone for your help.

The cheaper one should be fine as long it is not an upgrade CD.. I don't know why the OEM would be so expensive.

Just make sure it is not an "upgrade" Windows XP, but the full OS CD.

There is also the difference between XP Home Edition and XP Pro. Make sure you get XP Pro.

I've got the Windows XP Pro full operating system with SP2 ordered and it will be here in a few days. Does anyone know any site I can go to for directions on a complete "clean" install of XP Pro. I found one, but it starts with just inserting the XP disks. I'm sure there is more to it than that, for example, I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that the BIOS should be updated. Also, how do I get the old 2000 off of the computer. Do I need to format the C drive? Also, will I need those recovery disks I keep hearing about, or will the XP disks have everything I need on it? Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm a little lean in the computer savy department. Thanks for any help.

Look at IBM site (www.ibm.com) and then your machine and you should find the information you want...at least it's available for other systems, so I assume it's there for yours too.
