RST Driver Vs. Chipset Driver

Should a user install both the Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver and the chipset driver, or just one of the two? Is one better than the other or are they both needed?

They are different things, one is no better than the other. RST is the driver for the storage controller, previously referred to as Matrix Storage. The chipset driver is for the chipset of the motherboard. I would install both to be certain you are up to date, but some may say to get the drivers from windows update. In my experience some of the drivers from windows update are either generic or outdated.

EDIT: By the way, where can I find this in the device manager? I've already installed it, but I don't see a category for "Storage controllers", like there is on my desktop.

Not in front of a computer at the moment, but it is under one if the other categories, possibly system. It will say something about a "Intel x Port SATA Controller" or something along those lines.

Ah, gotcha. It actually reads "Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller". Can you see my confusion

Now, I'm trying to hunt down which of the dozens of System devices is the chipset. My best guess is: "Intel(R) QM67 Express Chipset Family LPC Interface Controller", but the driver version is slightly different from the one I just installed. Could a ThinkPad owner help me out?

The chipset package includes many different drivers, it's not just one device. Why not just run the .exe and install the whole package automatically?

I did install the drivers using the executable, but the version numbers didn't change. My chipset is version 9.2.0.1016, before and after I just installed "oss924ww.exe", which should have brought me up to 9.2.0.1021.

EDIT: Even after updating manually and browsing to the folder I installed the new drivers to, Windows still thinks I have the most current version

Is there any reason in particular for why you are updating? If there isn't a need than you are probably fine. Where are you seeing the version numbers?

The version numbers are in Properties-->Driver tab of each chipset-related device. Everything's working fine, though, so I guess I'll let it be

Probably best just to leave it than. But what are you comparing the version numbers against? The version numbers will not all update to the package version number, they should change to match that of the driver file itself. You can see which file the device is using with device manager, and then compare that to the version found by right clicking the file in explorer, selecting properties --> details tab.
