A31 and USB2

#1 Post by cptvideo » Sun May 22, 2011 11:50 pm

Why is this so hard? I've bought two PCMCIA USB2 adapters in the last two days. The SIIG was dead on arrival. Took it back to Frys and got a no-name (well, the company's name is PPA Intnl.) that fired right up, loaded drivers but still delivers only USB1 speeds.

Is there something about an A31 running XP Pro SP2 that won't allow USB 2 to work through PCMCIA?

thanks in advance if you know an answer.

Craig

welcome to the forum.
sorry you're having trouble.

there should be no reason you can get pcmcia usb2 to work. i can't comment on the cards you're using, but i had no trouble on my a31p, running xpsp2, using ibm's card/dongle. i haven't used that machine in a while, though.

I use an IBM USB 2.0 Cardbus Adapter with great results with an IBM USB 2.0 80GB USB 2.0 Harddrive
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 41060.html on an IBM A31p running Win XP SP2

FYI: As of JUN 16, 2011 there are (6) of these adapters for sale at the "Buy-it-Now" price of $59.00 at the well-known auction site:

I have also had good success with Adaptec USB 2.0 Cardbus Adapter
http://www.amazon.com/Adaptec-AUA-1420- ... B000062STT

This PCCard is widely available but is NOT a flush fitting card

I successfully used the AKE BC168 with Via chipset inside an A31p, and I am pretty sure it gave me USB2.0 (the device did not complained about being plugged into a slow port as it normally would).
