T60P Whine

#1 Post by taichi » Tue May 24, 2011 1:15 pm

From, I think, the upper left corner of my laptop I've had an intermittent vibration/whine. Last night when I left the computer on unused for a couple of powers it made a steady vibration/whine.

From an earlier post it was discussed that it's probably the fan...it's not the HD for sure...it was replaced.

If it was the inverter, wouldn't there be some display oddity?

These two fan numbers are considered appropriate:
41V9932
41W6407.

Thanks!

41V9932 is the fan FRU# number I'm used to seeing in T60P's. Run tpfancontrol in manual mode and experiment with fan speeds. When the noise occurs simply turn the fan off to see if it goes away. If it does, you'll have your answer. Don't forget to turn the fan back on ;).

I had a similar issue and mine was the fan. Took the fan off the heatsink after dismantling, pulled off the blades from the spindle and applied a small drop of fine-grade machine oil to spindle, now it works better than before the whine.
I used a drop of StClaire Nano Oil which I normally apply to the threads of my LED flashlights, but ordinary sewing machine oil (easier to find/purchase) will also be fine.
Often outspoken, please forgive any cause for offense.
Thank you all for reading.

In relation to lubrication the fan (as suggested above), the thread T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside may be of interest.

if you should now or later consider to replace your fan, notice the difference between 41V9932 and 41W6407 as discussed in the thread Fan for T60 2007-CTO V3B.

Johan:

Thanks for the response.

I read the linked post regarding the different fan models, but am still a bit uncertain. It appears that 41W6407 is the superior fan , but is it the right one for my T60P with the discrete ATI GPU? Also, would you buy the fan with heatsink, or just the fan?

Thanks again.
