Bluetooth Optical Mouse for T42

#1 Post by gg3761 » Mon Jun 14, 2004 3:14 am

Is there a mouse to use with a T42 w/bluetooth that does not need any receiver/transmiter other than what's built in the laptop? Something small would be nice.

Both MS and Logitech works. They are both big though, size of a hamster, or a rat.

If you find any small bluetooth mouse, it'll work without an additional receiver--it'll work off of your internal bluetooth. Bluetooth is bluetooth; the profiles are the same (well, mostly, v1.1 profiles came out with some additions-- but nothing effecting mouse profiles)

I bought the Thermaltake BT500. It is very small (maybe too small), but great for traveling. Wasn't sure how to make it communicate, but it only took a few minutes. It is very responsive, highly recommended solution.

Good luck, buy it at newegg.com, they are fast, and no gimmicks.

I'll ditto the sentiments on the Thermaltake. Great mouse.

I do not have a bluetooth mouse but what I have heard and read is pretty much what JaimitoBond summarized. MS and Logitech should work without a problem, although they are pushing to the big size

Has anyone, as of yet, succeeded in finding the black'n'red bluetake bt500 / thermaltake x-wing bluetooth mouse, WITHOUT the dongle?

I've emailed a couple of stores, but noone sold it without the dongle.

I have purchased the black/red and blue/silver and both required the purchase of a dongle. I think newegg.com had the best price (with shipping) but all prices were very close.

If you find it without dongle, please post your source. Thanks!

I wish they offered a thermaltake that was just black! The blue and red are just not doing it for me :(

They may sell it with a dongle, but it is unnecessary to use it if you have internal bluetooth since IBM's bluetooth profiles match the basic 1.1 version and will support all bluetooth mice.

They sell it with the dongle because the general public (A) doesn't have bluetooth and think that it works magically or (B) to give the easiest compatibility for those who have bluetooth but don't have version 1.1 of the profiles and can't update. One such case is earlier adopters of bluetooth (like the bluetooth receiver model found on the A series) which only supports 1.0 profiles. They would need to use the USB dongle. All other IBM bluetooth stacks support the 1.1 versions in the software releases.

I ordered the Logitech MX900 Bluetooth mouse the other day from Amazon, should be receiving it sometime this week. I've heard nothing but good things about this mouse, hopefully it lives up to my insanely high expectations! Here's a direct link to Amazon's page that also has some user reviews regarding it's usage with Notebooks that have internal BT:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... sr%3D11-1/

I'm pretty sure I got rid of the reference tag, as I'm not trying to promote Amazon.com or anything, just linking for reference. If not, you can just goto their site and search for MX900.

Wow thats pretty expensive, although I too am looking at this mouse for my new T42p. Post back when it comes in...I would like to know how it does with IBM's internal BT.

Does anyone know if the 2378DXU has Bluetooth? I can't seem to figure it out, my T42 does indeed have a bluetooth status light on it, but I can't find it listed in any hardware information. I probably can find out but just in case anyone knows whether or not the status light indicates the presence of Bluetooth capability, or if this light is on every T42, Bluetooth or not?

It has BT, that is the model I'm using. Press Fn+F5, and make sure you have BT active. It works extremely well.

After a week, my mouse suddenly stopped communicating. It turned out to be the batteries. Obviously I should have turned it off when not in use... I can't tell if the Thermaltake BT500 automatically powers off. I assume not, as a week of partial use ran the batteries out. Time for rechargeables?

Flawlessly. I've used the MX900 and the diNovo keyboard (both BT) and they work without any issues at all (including the nifty media pad that is part of the diNovo setup)

-Cynic,

I tried the diNovo rig briefly but came to the conclusion that it is tailored to the desktop user with little consideration for mobile users. I like the charging base for the mouse and the fact that it uses NiMH AA's, but how do you cope with the lack of an on-off switch? This seems to me to be the real failing of that mouse that keeps it from being a candidate for use on a laptop (that and the fact that it weighs as ton!).

I did love the dNovo numeric keypad, except that it put the laptop keyboard in numeric keypad mode which was hard to adapt to. I wish there was a stand-alone bluetooth keypad that wasn't part of a $250 keyboard/mouse combo. :( That would be a very useful addition for anyone that crunches numbers.

Honestly, I love the ThinkPad keyboard and trackpoint. We just use a ton of the diNovo sets around work so I was curious for a day and used the complete setup. As for the mediapad... those aren't even used here by anyone. They've all ended up in drawers tucked away.

-cynic,

Would someone be willing to part with a mediapad for, say, $30?

Well here's a little tip. Apparently one can double-post by hitting the back button in IE. D'oh!

They're owned by the company, so I doubt we could sell them. There was one diNovo keyboard that was destroyed by soda. I might be able to sell the mediapad from that one. I'll check later this week if I can find it (it's officially out of our inventory since we had the whole set replaced and it was completely written off)

Don't know if anyone else saw this, but MacMice, a company that makes accessories for Apples, came out with this:
