i think apart from Lenovo dropping the R series line, it has done a pretty good job in retaining much of the old Thinkpad aesthetics. If Lenovo doesn't change anything about the thinkpad, then it would be losing as much money as IBM prior to the sales of the THINK pc brand to Lenovo.
Current ThinkPad: T430u, T430s, X1 Carbon, X1, X230t, X220t, X230, X220, X201t, W520, W701ds, T500, T420 and many more

In the absence of an x301 replacement, I'm considering getting a 13.3" Macbook Air & installing Windows 7 on it. In its favour are 256GB flash memory & 16:10 screen (1440*900). The 2 things which I'm not keen on are the glossy screen & chiclet keyboard.
X301: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU U9400 @ 1.40GHz, 256GB C300 SSD, 8GB RAM, Windows 10 Pro, Battery 6 Cell

dr_st wrote: Sounds like you the X220 is very close to what you specified here. Of course it is not as thin as the X301, and consequently weighs about the same, despite being a smaller screen and no optical drive. I think it is due to mostly two factors: the non-low-voltage CPU (which requires better cooling) and the IPS screen, which generally tends to be heavier than a TN.
X220 is definitely a winner. Build is better than the classic" X series I had a number of years ago (X32, X41) and while it gives the impression of being less study than the original X20, it is MUCH lighter and with the modern rollcage and steel hinges that impression is probably not based in fact.

Honestly I think that Lenovo has advanced the ThinkPad brand in recent years. Far better than the T42 and T60 days.
