701 (also 380,600,770 + others) AC Adaptor

#1 Post by ozzymud » Sat May 28, 2011 5:02 pm

Just received another 701C, this one came with a newer Lenovo ADP-65KH AC Adaptor (not noticing that, I plugged it into the 701 and it worked).

Question is, it is 20v... whereas the tpvol1.pdf manual says under "Checking the AC Adapter" it should be +15.5 to +17.0 ...but... when looking up the adaptor on ThinkWiki... it lists the 701 along with MANY other models and this Lenovo adaptor's part number is for several of those models... To add to my confusion, i looked up the 701 FRU (04H6903) from the manual... the 1st link showed this adaptor, and it doesn't list the 701!

Although it works, i don't want to prematurly burn out the DC-DC portion of the system board... opinions? Is 20v O.K. for long term use? (This machine will likely be ran 100% of the time from mains power not the battery (even though i successfully rebuilt the NiMH battery :) )

Do NOT use that 20V adapter, it WILL ruin your machine.
16V/3.36A or 16V/4.5A is what you need.

I contacted the seller... they had been using that adapter in the machine for quite a while...

@RealBlackStuff: Is your "it WILL ruin your machine" from experience/knowledge? I am no electronics tech thus why my original question... I can read and see that oem was 16v, spec'd range is 15.5-17v... but depending on with what chips/capacitors a board has... often manufacturers put VERY safe specs on parts. Not arguing, just clarifying :P

The 760 series which I am way more familiar with lists 2 ac adapters... one is 14.5-17v, the other is 18-21v (Page 350 of tpvol3.pdf). This is a total voltage range of 14.5 to 21v, not outside the realm of this 20v one on a 16v spec.

Think I will leave it plugged into the one that the battery had exploded in (from long term storage) for a week or two and leave it running 24/7. I have another system board ready to go into it anyways as one of the battery contacts had corroded off. (So it's "dead" anyway :) )

It had already been plugged in to charge the NiMH battery I rebuilt and play around with getting a CF card replacing the hard disk.

Not my personal experience (fortunately), but several others on TPF have reported burnt-out mobos due to using a wrong adapter with too high a voltage.
