R50e compatible motherboard&R50e keeps rebooting

#1 Post by dukysta » Sun May 29, 2011 7:06 am

Hello,

I have IBM R50e Thinkpad, Type 1834 BYG and I found under external RAM cover this FRU 27K9969. I want to buy new motherboard but I am little confused because lots of site list other FRUs as compatible with my motherboard. Especially ebay for example and they are cheaper. So how can I know is that a real deal? Can please somebody confirm compatible FRU motherboards with my laptop.

Another question, my R50e keeps restarting, I have excluded RAM, HDD, battery problem and power supply. Sometimes it restarts after hour or two working on it sometimes I can't even boot because it keeps rebooting. Fan is working, but sometimes I can't even hear it. I have clean the dust and put new thermal paste on CPU cooler. I also removed modem and wireless card to narrow down the problem. Also when I power it up I get blank screen then I tap harder with my hand on case for example above pcmica, hdd or keyboard near access IBM and esc and then it starts booting. Any suggestions?

Thank you

Duke

My research shows that FRU 39T0336 or 39T0334 are conpatible with your machine. From your description my opinion it that you have a loose or broken solder joint/s on the Southbridge on your systemboard.

Thank you for fast reply. Yes, I also suspected something with MOBO is wrong. I will try with heat gun but probably I will need new motherboard. Also on link you posted all models regarding R50e are starting from letter K to S. But mine is BYG. So I assume that chassis is same for all R50e thinkpads and any motherboard designed for r50e can fit. Am I right? Because I found this motherboard but it has not FRU you listed. Can I buy it?

You can also 'upgrade' to an ATI motherboard 39T5696 or 39T5695.
Other mobos from the T4x/R5x will not fit, because they have a docking connector on the bottom of the mobo, for which there is no opening in your laptop-base.

In addition to the docking connector which RBS mentioned, some boards have firewire and some do not. So for example if your machine has firewire and the board you get does not, obviously there will be an opening in that area of the case. Other than those things, I think you can use any R50e board.

I really don't need docking connector so can it still fit in mine laptop case? I ask because there are fine and cheap boards but they dont have full description so I do not know if they have or haven't docking connector. Is there some way to identify boards with or without docking connector? For example board I posted in my previous post?

The question has already been answered. Any R50e board will fit.
