Suggestion for new buy

#1 Post by jwege » Sun May 29, 2011 10:48 am

Hi to the Pro's here.

Since now my old TP's seem to give up one by one (recently my wife's R40 with fallback on a R31, now my R52), I would like to request some suggestions for a new buy. My situation:

I have so many "spare parts": docking stations for T42, R31, Ultrabay Adaptors for R52, T42[slim] for HD's and first and foremost a fair number of power supplies.

Since I do travel a lot between different locations, I have power supplies allmost everywhere, in the house on each floor, in the luggage, in the car etc.

Now, If I go to buy a new one, what could be a recommendadtion to be able to re-use such? As I am aware, the power supply seems to be the most problematic since the new Lenovo models have different ones, right?

Anyone with a good idea?

Thanks so much in advance!

Your adaptors work with T20, T21, T22, T23, T30, T40, T41, T42, T43, A20m/p, A21m/p, A22m/p, R30, R31, R32, X20, X21, X22, X23, X30, X31, X32, A30, A31, R40, R50, R51 and R52 models...

Even older models, lot's listed over at ThinkWiki (I only know this as it also is the same 16V one that is proper for my ThinkPad 701C (i.e. the 486 Butterfly)

Keep in mind that the majority and the R31 use a 45W, T4xxx series use 72W, and the R4xxx/R5xxx series say 89W on ThinkWiki... You can always use the higher wattage ones on lower requirement machines... but vice versa would put a lot of stress (as well as taking longer to charge) the higher requirement machines. (i.e. a 45W on your R52)

Just have a looksee at 16 Volt Coax connector @ ThinkWiki

You definately have a wide range of machines to choose from :)

I'd recommend another R52 with Intel GPU (OR just replace mobo and LCD in your existing machine) as the most cost-effective replacement/update.
With a bit of DIY you can also convert the R52 (and T43) to use SATA hard disks, which extends the lifespan of those machines for a few more years to come.
See this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=94308

Anything from T60/R60/X60 upwards uses 20V AC adapters in 65W (Intel GPU) and 90W (ATI/nVidia GPU) versions.
I believe the new W500/W700 series even use 120W versions.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I hate it when electronics change their power sources and adapters and laptop battery. Just look for the good deals and buy the laptop that will best fit your needs. If all your extra power supplies and parts don't work on the new one, then sell them on ebay. I know I have a closet full of old technology that I need to either throw away or sell on ebay.

Funny, the thought of doing that NEVER crosses my mind... I guess that's why there is a working Commodore SX-64 still sitting about 3 feet away from me, and a Acer/Smith Corona 286 in the kids room under their monitor (they use it to play OLD games on), and a Palm m100 on my desktop that scrolls info about my system(palmorb+lcdsmartie) :P
