Slow boot, no wifi on formerly good T41p...saga continues

#1 Post by nichevo » Sun May 29, 2011 11:44 pm

Okay. Had T41p bought used from IBM SPP ("SPP"). Backlight went. Sent to be fixed. They said they put in a new backlight but it promptly fried. Blamed a "video relay circuit" on the planar. Wanted $$$ to fix it or another mobo to scavenge this circuit and I suppose reball. I had 'em send it back.

Ordered another T41p from eBay ("eBay"). Short form: it works and works pretty well. But had small wear mark/s on LCD, no HDD or caddy, 512MB RAM, 2200B wifi, slightly noisy fan.

Aha, I will swap in the SPP HDD, 2GB and abg wifi and er maybe the fan if need be (maybe i'll blow on it and tap it and it'll be ok).

The eBay one worked with the HDD, 2200b card and existing RAM (well I added my 1gb g.skill option ram to its option ram slot). Had to hunt and rebooted a few times finding the 2200b, finding a driver, getting past some permission issue to install...finally went. At least it found wifi networks though seemed to conect spottily.

OK...opened the T41p's...stripped primary ram, abg wifi. Put in the new (ebay) T41p.

Now...wifi lights up on bezel, Fn-F5 shows wifi powered on, get prompts that it has found wifi networks. But when I go to select, none shows. Either with ThinkVantage or Windows networking, no joy. Have uninstalled/reinstalled with Device Manager, no good.

Ideas? Either before I reopen it, or what to look for when I do so.

Am I better putting stuff back in the SPP model and swapping LCDs or whole lids? Or will whatever mobo prob cropped up fry that screen too?
If wishes were fishes we'd all cast nets
