Tablet Thinkpad?

#1 Post by Sir Nikon » Mon May 30, 2011 12:39 pm

The first laptop ever purchased was a T41p and for the three years I used it, it served me better than ever. Actually, my brother ended up with it and he's still using the thing every weekend to DJ parties.

I'm in the market for a few tablets for my business (let's just say a "geek alternative squad"). I have looked at a few HP tablets which were nice but even now I'm partial to IBM Thinkpads (and unsure about Lenovo, have not used many).

Sure, I could hop on Google or search Amazon but I'm curious about what you guys would too (after browsing for years, I've learned to trust quite a number of you gents).

What problems are known with tablets? Or what things should I look out for? What are some great tablets? New or old, I'm curious to get real info.

The X41t has the perfect size but is kind of exotic with its awkward and expensive 1.8" PATA hard disk format.
You guys being some geeks(?), you can mod the X41t to use SATA hard disks.
I have an X41t but rarely use it.
The newer X60t and X61t of the same size are hard to beat for usability, where the X61t can take up to 8GB RAM if with a 64-bit CPU and OS. There's an upgrade possible to SXGA+ for the X6x models.
The above are all 4:3 aspect 12" XGA LCDs.
I like this screen size, but prefer 'regular' (non-tablet) models with 'regular' 2.5" hard disks, like my X31 or my travel companion X60s.
I have no experience with any newer widescreen tablets.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

The latest tablets are the X220t convertible tablets. They all come with a 12.5" IPS WideView displays. Some "MultiTouch" (pen and finger) and some scratch-resistant "Gorilla Glass" for outdoor use (pen only).

The new HP tablets retain the 1280x800 resolution, which may be useful if you plan to use your machine in portrait mode. You didn't say much about what you need or want, other than you like Thinkpads, which makes it hard to help. The single hinges on tablets can be problematic. Fujitsu is probably the other convertable maker that's worth consideration. The T900/T901, which are 13", or T730/T731 might be worth a look. They have an optical drive, which is modular, and can accept an addition hard drive or battery life if that floats your boat. They also I think are going to be 1280x800. If you're interested in a slate something like the Asus EP121 could work. It's got an ULV i3 CPU and a bluetooth keyboard. It's probably good for things where no much keyboard use is needed.
