dead sodimm ram slots T30

#1 Post by adrian6322 » Fri Jun 03, 2011 12:38 pm

Suppose that i have both memory slots dead .not working at all ....

Machine working fine ...just with a external monitor ..boot up OK ..all ok .and 1 ram slot not recognized(dead)..i did want to upgrade memory .so dissasembled and soldered the infamous pins..in the front memory ...i did not disconect the cmos battery ...
and i get adding solder .i get shorts in some pins .i cleared all .but i miss 1 ...sterted the laptop ...in both slots 1 at a time ..didnt work ...without memory i get 1-3-3-1 beeps ...bios error .advicing that no memory was found..or sistem error (more like memory)...waithing results of more expert testing the memory ...hope that is burned ..so laptop may work with a new one ...

If the 2 slots are dead .there are some way to use other memory ..lets say in a docking station ...just to start the laptop ....

Just curios ..Just asking

Tank You

There is no other way to boot the PC if your memory slots are bad. You need to start looking for another machine or a replacement systemboard.

reply from the technician ...your memory 512 mb is good .so being stubborn ...may take off the memory plastic holder or disconect 200 pins .....just like next step if not working afther that .the sistem board MoBo is .bad ...where can i get the schematics or electronic diagram

There are no IBM schematics available to the public.

Hi all ...afther desoldering the plastic sodimm ram holder ...y found 2 bridges of solder betwen pins or wathever the name in the MoBo ...cleared them and try the 512 Mb memory ...

Voala  bios start post and run the bios set-up ...recognicing the 512 Mb sodimm memory ...
Conclution .afther a bunch of starts .with and whitout sodimm ...it is hard to screw the MoBo ...because the short circuit in some pins ...the bios stops in ram recognition .....SO the MoBo its not dead....just Bloched to start

Just i put back the Sodimm Holder and solder with extreme caution :) Patience is my surname yes But not with The Kids lol. :BAAAD!:
I can not find the camera

I let you all know the final results of this fixture
Sicerely

Tank You RealBlackStuff....let me tell you that .the slot that solded(front one) did not work.not at all ...like at the begininn ...do not let the laptop start ...so by deduction i suppose that a short circuit is blocking the Bios Start ...

Without the sodimm memory holder (front one) the laptop starts. at last the Bios (HDD Taken out) afther soldering the plastic sodimm holder ...does not start ...and the classical 1-3-3-1- beeps ...((( no memory found))) so desoldered .and try start

Yes the machine start Bios ...so in theory ..if start without memory holder in place (desoldered) if i soldered back suscessfuly....in (theory) must start with the memory in the back holder ...and afther that if i try the memory in the front one and start i did a good job soldering the plastic thing 200 pins 100 each side ....abilitathing made workable the troubled memory holder ...

one more issue ...each individual pin must made contact with the memory sodimm ..and they are like .05 mm apart from the mobo there is the problem
the lead free solder that was used .have a higer fussion point in comparrison with the normal .or no lead free solder ...so the lead free is more hard ...prone to form ..that is called (SOLDADURA FRIA ) cold weld ..or something like that ..

Heat plus pressure in the MoBo ...from the side of the HDD ..yes the blue plastic spongy thing ...the lap grabbed from the corners ..hand rest ...miccrotensions in that area...
So... formation of crystals in the lead free weld (soldadura) and breaking of that crystals ...no flow of current or data .

This was a major fault in a TV in mexico called ZONDA now gone

Sorry for the grammar
Tank you

Funny T30 ...i did solder back the front memory holder ...chequing all 200 pins carefully..no shorts.........did not start whithout memory ...and the good one in the rear slot ....NADA.

So i took it off ...and start ..funny must be a short ..i cudnt see nothing wrong in the soldered pins ... so decided to leave the 1 working slot ...post bios start all ..OK

It is normal that the FAN stops runing when the win logo shows in screen ....shut it of afraid to damage CPU ...

thank you

The fan always runs at a cold start/boot, it's part of the start-check routine.
If the fan wouldn't come on, the laptop would refuse to start.
It then stops until the CPU needs cooling again.

Adrian, you were a little lucky, but normally if you short some pins on a re-solder job, you won't kill the laptop's system board. it might hurt the memory so use a cheaper 256MB to test with next time.

As you found out, if you have ANY shorted solder pins, the laptop will not start- it needs to see a good block of RAM to load. And the fan as i found out.

Looks like you are ok. so god luck with the T30.

Tank you cadillacmike68...the last time that soldered the memory holder .checked and rechecked the solders ...seking for bridges etc...nothing found ...maybe dirt ...cleaned the memory with a eraser ....nothing ....but did not start with the memory in the internal memory holder ...so desoldered cleaned the solders in the mobo ...and start OK ....
Decided to stop triying .and Use only one memory ....some solder spots come off from the mobo ...in the front slot .so better with one memory than not working at all

Yes i feel  .at last is working ...
when somebody is going to do a memory holder reflow..is requires experience ....if you are a novice in this matter ...do practice with junk electronics ....Mounted on board elements ...
if is going to work .the first shot is crucial .no overheat the area .....

i have experience soldering ...this was my first experience ...reflowing a memory holder ..did not work .how was expected ...

was only 1 memory working before reflowing .and is only 1 memory afther reflowing so yes a feel luchy ..

Tank you all guys for your help
