T40 problem fixing.
I was given this T40 (2373-AU3) last week to try and get working again.
When I got it the lights would come on for a sec and shut down.
I took out the ram and the system stayed running but gave the no ram beep code(1-3-1).
But the fan keep running. So I thought good, just bad ram.
I put in a good 512 DDR ram and the system runs but nothing coming up on screen. Fan and lights going.
I removed all drives and cards and ram and I get the 1-3-1 beep. (no ram)
Put good 512 in and lights come on ,fan going but nothing.
What would you try next?
I don't want to put alot of cach into it as it's only a low end T40.

Re: T40 problem fixing.
Well I stripped this T40 down and found it has been apart befor with different parts in it.
The model number on the back lists this T40 with a touch pad. It don't have one on it.
Then lists it as a pm 1.3ghz. But it's a 1.6ghz in it.
Then the screen lists as an XGA. But the fru# on the LCD it self is 11p8347. This makes it a SXGA+.
It has a Bluetooth antenna in the LCD case. No listing of it.
I wish I had a way to test the screen.

Re: T40 problem fixing.
Chances are it's the usual GPU failure.
Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?

Re: T40 problem fixing.
Ya that's what I'm thinking.
Yep connected to another monitor does nothing.
System does the same thing.
With out any ram I just get the 1-3-1 beeps and fans stay on.
With ram sometimes the It just shuts down/off after one sec and sometimes it stays on but nothing on the screens. No beeps no nothing.
It has the ati 9000 video also.

Try pressing on the SouthBridge chip - the large square one under the wireless card.
If that doesn't get it to boot either, you need a new board.
Good luck, old friend...

Re: T40 problem fixing.
Thx.
Just tried that just then. Still nothing.
Looks like it's just a parts system now.
I know one day I'll have another T4x system.

Well, if the machine is clean, all it takes is a replacement board and some time...
Love the fact that it doesn't have the touchpad - to me personally, T4x in 14" guise without a touchpad is the ultimate laptop design...

Re: T40 problem fixing.
It is clean and in great shape. Say 8/9 out of 10.
It does look nice without the touchpad.
It has the long fan which is nice. XP pro COA on bottom.
Looking at the LCD panel with a flash light looks good. If it was cracked you would see it. Just have to get a working system to light it up. The 80gig hdd works good. The adapter works good. Keyboard is the good one with the blue under caps.
Not bad for a 20.00 buy. All I really wanted was the cd-rw/DVD drive for my T60.

Re: T40 problem fixing.
Just a suggestion, if the machine is in otherwise good condition, get an R51 Intel board and make a TR451. I wouldn't spend more than $70 or so for one.

I have to look up the info but didn't some of the R51 intel video boards use SXGA+?ajkula66 wrote:Harry, he's got a SXGA+ in there...no go...I had the same idea then it hit me...

Ah, I didn't catch that. It's a no-go with an R51 Intel board and SXGA+.SaberX wrote: I have to look up the info but didn't some of the R51 intel video boards use SXGA+?

The R52 with Intel GPU is the only one in that range that supports SXGA+, but ONLY the 15" LCD (NOT the 14.1").SaberX wrote:... didn't some of the R51 intel video boards use SXGA+?

Thx for all the info.
Think I'm going to put it aside and keep my eye out for a barebones T4x with cracked LCD.
