Suitability of Windows 7 on T60?

#1 Post by mbarker » Sat Jun 04, 2011 11:40 am

I am getting ready to upgrade a T60 with XP/SP3 to Windows 7 Professional. I assume that this is doable..... since I actually bought the T60 just for this purpose so I can play around and learn Windows 7 without messing up my primary machine (the T42p).

Does this upgrade usually go smoothly? Anything I should know beforehand?

Thanks

Windows 7 will run quite well on a T60. It probably will already have most of the drivers, though you may wish to update them.

I just installed win7 on my new-to-me T60.
Runs great. I first installed win7. Then went to Lenovo site and downloaded the updated program. Then ran that and it found almost all drivers for win7. But I did have to get the ATI video driver on my own. Guessing it's where my T60 only has the x1300 with 64megs.
Can't think of one problem I had installing Win7.

Windows 7 is better than Vista for the computers of the last five years at least. For these computers Vista SP 2 should be better than XP, too. But here lots of people have a different point of view.

My thinkpad T60 runs Windows 7 very fine.

Vista is way too sluggish on startup and sometimes on shutdown. Its unbearable. Your upgrade should work fine but try to have 4GB of RAM. XP Mode won't run all that great due to your CPUS but it will work better if you reallocate memory and to do that you need 4GB if not more if possible.

You cannot use 4gb of ram on a T60. If you install 4gb, you can only see ~3gb (this is a hardware issue, there is no way around it). Windows 7 should run really well on a T60, even with intel 950 graphics. I think you will find it an improvement over xp, just remember that you need to use it for a couple of days for it to learn your habits to improve performance (at first there is not a huge change from xp)

My T60 only has 1.5gb of ram. Is this going to be a problem? I suppose it would be easy enough to upgrade but I had not really planned on doing it....so probably will not bother unless necessary. I have ATI graphics with 128mb which I think is a step up from Intel 950...although I'm not certain.

This is enough ram for windows 7. The integrated graphics takes some RAM for itself, the dedicated ATI graphics does not.

no it will not be a problem (I ran windows 7 on my t61 with 1gb ram for a while, intergrated graphics and all). this is just a fact that for future reference, you cannot use any more than 3gb of ram on that system, so don't bother putting more in.

I hope you enjoy the windows 7, it should run well on that system.

all 32-bit OS can only use part the 4GB. Windows 7 runs better than XP on the T60....the only thing to look for is the drivers for the graphics card.....but windows update will give you a working version, for all functions including resume.
