Rescue and Recovery stuck at 0% when restoring a backup

#1 Post by thoth » Mon Jun 06, 2011 6:25 am

Hey all,

Last night at around 12am I got a nasty piece of malware that wouldn't let me access my usual malware-removing tool (system restore) and now it appears that I have to restore a backup from my external HD. So I booted into R&R 4 and ran the restore backup function, which has been stuck at 0% progress since I started it (around seven hours). How long does it usually take for R&R 4 to restore a backup from an external HD because this can't possibly be right...

Thank you for all the help!

EDIT: I forgot to mention, but I use a T500 series laptop

The time it takes depends on how the backup is connected. USB is slower than eSATA. eSATA is slower than ultrabay. Even if you have the data on a USB 1.1 drive, 7 hours is not normal. Something is wrong. What kind of virus?

It was the Windows Vista Recovery malware scam, but after failing to boot into safe mode to try and remove it manually, my computer booted into R+R 4, with the backup taking forever.

I'm kinda hesitant to just shut off my computer and try it again, since I don't want to risk losing any of the backups though. I used an HP Smart Save 500GB external hard drive to save the backups on, which is USB 2.0, but if the backup is still running (or so it says) I'm not sure if it's safe to risk data deletion...

I left it running while I went to work, so hopefully my computer decided to actually work during that time, but I have no way of knowing that currently.

Hopefully this is enough info.

It's just going to sit there forever. You should boot off a R&R CD and start over.

Well I found my product recovery discs and booted from them so all that remains to do is just load up a backup and I should be good.

Thanks for the feedback.
