How can I identify the screen in my X220?

#1 Post by JayNYC » Fri Jun 10, 2011 5:33 pm

Hi. Just got an X220--- type 4290-35U. The screen looks real good, but just so that I can sleep at night, how do I know for certain if I have the IPS screen?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_d ... ation_data

Look at the bottom of the page for tools to read the EDID data from the screen. That info will tell you the brand and model of the display.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Under device manager, if it shows Wide viewing angle & high density flexView display 1366x768, its IPS.

I know the question is answered, but here's more info. If you ever own a decent HDTV LCD, unless they are the real cheap kind, most likely they will either use IPS or MVA display technology, these both have very good viewing angles. So if you look at them from which ever way you should still see the image. 'TN' panels which is cheaper and uses by 99.9% of laptop and monitors have horrible viewing angle and usually not good color accuracy as well. Some more interesting info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#Display_industry

With that said, I'm ordering the X220 with TN panel which is good enough for me on a laptop because I tend to look directly at the screen while using it. I will however use a colorimeter to correct the colors and gamma of the display which can potentially greatly improve image accuracy.

$50 seems a small price to pay for a gorgeous screen.
