T61 fan grinds to a halt

#1 Post by mr.blitz » Sat Jun 11, 2011 4:26 am

I turned on my T61 this morning to find that the fan sounds like it is trying to spin, and does so a couple of times, but with great effort, then grinds to a halt and i get 'Fan Error' message.

For a couple of months i have heard a rattling sound coming from the fan, which i now assume was the bearings...i am guessing the bearings have seized or have worn themselves away to the point that one has shifted from its position, now making it impossible for the fan to spin effectively.

Does anyone know what fan i need for my T61?

I have read it is dependant on the graphics card...i have the 512mb version of the nVidia card.

I am happy to effect the repair myself, having worked as a pc tech for a number of years in the past, i am confident with this job. I just want to make sure the fan i order is the right one for the system.

Type -7663-13G (upgraded HDD to 250gb and ultrabay with 120GB HDD)
CPU - 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo (Merom)
Graphics - nVidia Quadro 140M 512mb

I have found these on eBay...are they suitable?

When you disassemble the laptop to replace the fan, you can double check the P/N or FRU number on the old fan and while you're at that stage, check and note other parts/components FRU & P/N in case of future replacements.
Often outspoken, please forgive any cause for offense.

Well, my T61 fan (Intel) is being cranky. Every so often I get a fan error since it won't spin up on the first try after some downtime. Given the symptoms and age, is it likely that some lubricant will fix the problem, or more likely that a replacement is needed? If the latter, which FRU (if several vendors) is the best? Is there a superior aftermarket one I should consider?

Never use oil or a wet lube on the fan, lock smiths graphite would be a better choice,as you will have a gummy dust magnet.

Did you get an answer on this?
I see in the hardware manual it lists both of those.
I've been searching, but I have not found confirmation.
I'd like to get this part ordered before opening it up.
I have:
ThinkPad T61 (7665-13U)
T7500(2.2GHz), 1GB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1440x900 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn(n-disabled), Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Business

EDIT: yes interchangeable.
