Docking station and tray

I am planning to get a docking station for the A31p.

I am looking at the e-bay and I see some with tray and some without it.

What does the tray do other than bottom support?

Is it okay to use it without the tray? Any possible problems with using without the tray?

My docking station (Dock II) is w/o tray .. and I think that is better because air can circulate around my A31p for cooling.

BTW .. I live near a university town (Ann Arbor) and found a source for 'previously owned' Dock-II's .. returned leased machines .. for about $30.00. Seems like a great value.
