PENTIUM M CPU 1.8GHz/2M/400 vs 1.6/1M/400--Much difference?

#1 Post by Oortism » Thu Jun 23, 2011 4:46 pm

Is there much of a difference in speed if I was to upgrade from a 1.6 /1M cache to a 1.8 /2m cache cpu? Is it worth the cpu upgrade?

Thank you---Oortism

It's a cheap enough upgrade where I'd say go for it. The performance boost will be noticeable, but it will not blow you away.

Harryc....Thank you very much for the response. The laptop is for my 13 year old grandson, so a good little bump of speed will be good to get.

Thanks---Oortism

The performance increase through this upgrade may not be as significant as adding more RAM or upgrading the hard drive. How much RAM and what kind of hard drive is currently in this laptop? What model is this laptop?
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I agree....you also would see a slight differences in speed due to the 2M cache if switching the cpu's..

It's a Thinkpad R51. I have 1.5 gig of ram and a 7200 HD on there. Both ram and hd I had laying around, so no $ invested. Had to buy a $20 keyboard as the original one was messed up. So now it's the cpu that I am debating in buying between 1.8ghz/2m/400 or 2.0/1m/400 or 2.2/512k/400. Ok, guys help me out as to which one would be the best fit? Thank you guys for the responds in helping this old man (Lol) get a laptop together for his grandson.

No debate here. The latter ones are NOT PM and will NOT fit or work in your ThinkPad.

PM 745 (SL7EN) works great in these machines.

ajkula66,
Thank you for the responds. So even though on ebay it says: Intel Pentium M 2.0 GHz 2Mb 400 FSB Laptop CPU SL7EM, that wouldn't work on the Thinkpad R51? Trying to get as much speed as I can. If not, then its the PM 745 (SL7EN).

Thank you---Oortism

SL7EM will work but it's 2MB and not 1 as originally posted...that's why I said it wouldn't work since there are no 2.0 PM CPUs with 1MB cache...

The last one (2.2) is likely a P4M and not PM...

Hope this clears it...
