T43 9 cell battery life

#1 Post by danT43 » Thu Mar 31, 2005 1:17 am

Is around 4 hrs of battery life normal for the 9 cell battery with T43 with light to medium use (no intensive disk usage and no gaming, mainly browsing the web)
ThinkPad T43 2668-98U
Brand new battery
Screen brightness: 3
Power settings: Battery Optimized

I was expectin maybe at least 5 hrs with this kind of activity.

Let me know what your battery life is guys.

Thanks... your Battery is in great shape. I don't personally have a 9 cell. Maybe others can chime in on your 4 hr. time....seems low to me.

Well at least IMB claims 5-6 hrs with that battery and as I said I dont really load the thing. If I start using photoshop intensively, I dont think it will last evan 3 hrs.

Anyone with 9-cell battery please post battery life with T43 please.

With maximum power saving and the screen set to Level 4 brightness, wifi on, I get about 3 hrs 20 minutes with the six cell 4800mah battery and about 5 hrs with the nine cell 7200mah battery.

To get these numbers you need to make sure you set cpu speed to low or lowest, make sure powerplay is enabled in your ATI graphics settings, and that your wifi is configured for maximum battery life. If I lower the screen brightness more I can achieve or even exceed IBM's battery life estimates of 3.9 hrs and 5.75 hrs respectively. Good luck!

Thanks for the info.

All that you point is already done on my computer as followes
Display brightness: 3
Prpcessor speed: Lowest
Powerplay: Enabled
Wireless Powes Save Mode: Maximum

With these settings I get almost around 2.5-3 hrs with the 6-cell batteri and I get around 4 hrs with 9-cell battery.
All this with very light use of the laptop - mainly browsing the web and reading and writing e-mails.

I dont get it. I dont beleive that this kind of battery life difference could be only due to the diplay difference in our computers.

What kind of battery time does the T42 get? I thought the T43 and T42 times should be similar since the T43 batteries have a 10% increase in battery times...

danT43,

I just noticed that your T43 is a 15" model and that is the reason why your battery life is limited. Even in maximum power saving mode, according to IBM, the 15" model compared to the exact same configuration 14" model will suffer at least 30 minutes less run time. In real world usage that difference could easily be one hour which is exactly what you're experiencing. A major reason I chose the 14" model is because of the light weight and favorable battery life.

Shoot

I hate that. I really prefer the 15" screen.

Well I guess I'll have to live with it and buy an Ultrabay slim battery so I can replace main battery without shutting down the machine.

Thanks

The 15" display is most certainly the reason. IPS displays like IBM FlexView eat a lot of power. I have a friend with a 15" SXGA+ equiped T42 and the best he can get on a 6-cell battery is 3 hours or so (typical is 2.5 hours) with wifi on and screen brightness at medium.
