They both use a PATA(IDE) hard drive 2.5" 9.5mm, so physically yes. Whether Windows 7 will boot or not on the T42 is questionable. If you plan to reinstall the OS then yes. Dunno if Windows 7 will agree to boot up with so many hardware changes... but with intel chipsets and ati video in both it is very plausible. Might run into issues with activation though.

What if i just installed xp instead of windows 7? Will that give it a better chance of working smoothly?

If you don't care about the data on the Windows 7 drive... just pop it in an boot... see what happens... 7 might boot, install some new/different drivers and your done...

Worst case, 7 lock/freezes/whatever... Install a fresh OS.. either 7 or XP should work on that machine... which one depends on your own preference and driver availability.

In my (limited) experience, it's easier to swap Win7 hard drives than XP hard drives. In this case, I bet it's going to work because the T42 and R51 are very similar. Just give it a try -- nothing will explode.

I did Windows XP T43 to R52 just the other day. No re-activatioin necessary. I'm pretty sure R51 and T42 are likewise cousins. Assuming this is valid Windows 7, you will probably get a "3 days until automatic activation" message, as it detects the hardware change. You will then have to call into the MS automated activation system and enter the code they give you. Then, close the 3 or 4 "found new hardware" dialog boxes that pop up, run Windows update to install new hardware drivers for the R51 and reboot. I think it should be fine.

R51/T42 are indeed the same hardware, R51e is noticeably different though - it uses ATI RC410MD chipset, with a different graphics adapter, network controller and everything.

Well, if pianowizard is correct and 7 is more forgiving then XP (which has been VERY forgiving to me), then it should be no worries.

I'm with dr_st here...

R51e is closer to T43/p and R52 than it is to T42. I predict blue screens due to a different chipset and FSB to begin with.

Thank you for all responses but it did not work. Now I need guidance for the gpu prolbem with the t42 that prompted the change in the first place.

Have you thought about selling this T42 and upgrading to a T60? Even with this GPU issue, some people would still be interested in buying this laptop for parts. Last year, my T42 started to have this issue and I sold it for parts on Craigslist for $41, with the hard drive and RAM removed. If you are including the hard drive and RAM, you could get much more than $41.

I second this suggestion - especially based on the fact that you can obtain a (seemingly?) MINT condition 15" SXGA+ (4:3 LCD) T60 with the beautiful FlexView/IPS display for as little as $200 - see e.g. the thread FS: T-60 15" Thinkpad Flexview excellent working condition. Full specs for the listed T60 (in stock configuration) are:
ThinkPad T60 (model/type 2007-55U)

Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83 GHz) CPU, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB 5400rpm HD, 15" 1400x1050 LCD, 64 MB ATI Radeon X1300 graphics card, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1 Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6cell Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
For images of this T60, see e.g. the thread FS: Beautiful MINT T60 ThinkPads with 15" SXGA+ Flexview.
