My first choice would be my Tandy Color Computer 3.

It doesn't crash.

Well, I am down to one computer for myself now (wife keeps the MBA), and it is a HP DX2400. I got it off lease several months ago for $200 with monitor and product keys for Vista Business and Office 2007. It runs fine, and is upgradable to 8GB of RAM and an Intel Quad core, although I don't think I'll do that for years. I don't like the look of the case -- too glossy, but at least the monitor has a matte finish. Speaking of which, I still think the Sun Ultra was one of the nicest looking computers ever built:

I also like the clean two-tone look of newer Fujitsu desktops:

To be honest I will probably still be using my T43 in 2 years.

That being said if I had a choice I would have my T43 chassis with a Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and SSD and a 512MB GPU of some flavor.

But since we have to go with real machines, that Sun Ultra 24 sure is a nice pick. I could live with that quite easily. Also, Solaris FTW!
New:

I have changed my mind. I have traveled with my 3.5-lb Panasonic Y5 a few times and found that even that is too heavy. So, I am changing my answer to this question to the 2.6-lb Sony Z2. Its 1600x900 resolution isn't as good as the Y5/Y7's 1400x1050, but the weight advantage is huge. Unfortunately, I will have to wait for 4 to 5 years before the prices of Z2's drop below $500.

(Of course I am aware that the Z2 also has the 1920x1080 option, but I don't want such a high res on a 13.1" screen.)

I thought I had found it in the IPS screen X220, but alas mine kept destroying SSDs, and so it went back to Lenovo.

I guess the 11" MacBook Air remains my top choice, even though I wish for a few more hours of battery life. The 13" is better if I can have only computer, but since I am able to have more than one, I bought (and prefer) the 11". I have a 15" MacBook Pro for those times I need more display or power.
