Thinkpad x220 will not STAY off

I just purchased two thinkpad x220t.
When I shut them down, both appear to power down normally.
However, after I close the notebook, within about 20 seconds the small battery indicator and sleep indicator on the outside of the notebook's lid lights up. I have interpreted this as the computer going into sleep mode, even after it has been shut down. This seems to occur after the computer has successfully been shut down.
If I open the notebook up and swipe my finger across the fingerprint reader (the little green light is lit there as well), the computer boots back up.
I am thinking that all this means the computer is only asleep and not actually off and is using battery power to run both the indicator lights and the fingerprint reader.
Has anyone encountered this as well and can you advise whether there is a solution.

What method are you using to shut them down?

I choose shutdown from the windows start menu.
The computers do their usual thing and after about 20 seconds go completely dark and appear shut down.
I close the lid and put the notebook on a table and soon thereafter those two indicator lights come on.

This is just a guess, but...maybe you are not giving it enough time to shut down. Are you waiting until you hear the power off beep before shutting the lid? It might be that the OS is still "live" and when the lid is shut it follows the setting in the OS to suspend.

i just shutdown the computer.
The computer does seem to shutdown, although i do not hear a beep. everything goes dark and all indicator lights turn off. Without moving the computer or touching the lid at all, within about 10 seconds after all goes dark, the fingerswipe green light turns back on, followed shortly thereafter by the wifi and bluetooth lights.
if i swipe my finger on the reader the whole system boots back up.

any thoughts on this.
both brand new pc's are doing the very same thing

I think you are just logging out of Windows and not shutting down. Check the power management settings in Windows.

well, i normally use mac computers, and i use windows xp at work.
but it seems rather simple, choosing start menu, then clicking shut down, all appears like a shutdown process, and i am not clicking log out.
just ran through the process a few times and each time the wifi and bluetooth indicators return as well as the fingerswipe active light.
all i could think of trying in power mgmt was to turn off the go to sleep when cover closed but now i dont even close the notebook, i just leave it still on the table and these lights return.

I'm not a Windows 7 user either, so I guess we will have to wait until someone comes along who can tell us how to shut down Windows 7... Seems like I recall the first time or two I tried restarting 7, I did the same thing as you, just logged out of Windows. But, I don't remember what I had to do differently to get the action I wanted.

Never the less, I think this is a Windows question, and not a X220 or even ThinkPad question. Maybe a moderator will notice this is in the wrong place and move it. But, you can change the title so that Windows users will notice it.

I suspect that the "shut down" button has been set to "standby" rather than "shut down". There is a setting where you tell Windows 7 what to do when this button is pressed. I don't remember how you change this setting though.

Suggest you look at POWER MANAGER settings; (advanced settings)
there should be /is a setting to change the 'behavious' of what happens when

> press pwoer buttons
>press Fn+ F4

etc > am sure its messed up
as I have a 220T , and its sweeet ...

well, i tried the power management strategy, and thanks for posting the link for changing the windows shutdown button properties. i tried that too to no avail.
if anyone else has suggestions or has encountered this problem as well i would love to hear from you.
i cannot imagine that both of my tablets have this problem and there are not many more with the same issue.
i am afraid to open my third unit which just arrived friday.
all were bought from different vendors , each about 2-3 weeks apart, this must be a prevalent issue.

With the AC adapter plugged in, go into power manager, power plan, events, Lid closed, select 'shut down' under the AC settings drop down list, save and exit ... then close the lid. What happens?

To date I don't have the Fingerprint Reader enabled on mine, but I read that the X220 is made to power on from a fingerprint swipe. Check your various BIOS settings.

thanks for all the suggestions.
i found the answer and it had to do with the fingerprint reader.
the fingerprint reader was set to enable auto-on and auto-login. of course if the fingerprint reader is enabled to turn on the machine, then the battery is always on to power the fingerprint reader and enable this functionality. once i disabled this feature the computer now turns off completely.

thats seems 'strange' as it seems that your are saying " factory settings' are set for FP reader to "auto power "ON".....
Mine is still as per factpory settings ( I added my 'fingures' to it) and rebooted ....) and I MADE a consious effort to reprocate your 'issue' on my x20T , BUT COULDNT GET IT!

but then I have all Windows & Lenovo Updates via SU ; and ALL other TvT stuff taken off ( as I dont use any ThinkVantage (TvT) apps apart from Systems Update (SU).... umm.....

But glad you got yours sorted.

By default, Windows 7 has the shutdown button set to actually shutdown.

After it "turns off", what happens if you pull the AC and battery and reinsert it?

yes i received 3 brand new lenovo x220T computers. the third one is still in the box but the two i opened came from different resellers and the original settings were for auto-power on with the fingerprint reader.
this software is part of the lenovo thinkpad software, which I have kept on the system. i am intrigued by all the personalization lenovo allows. at the same time i could see down the road this stuff might bog down the memory. i am actually an avid mac fan because imo windows computers always slow down within a two year span. my three macs run beautifully always.
if you took off the lenovo software i assume you removed the finger swipe ?
I dont know. having that on was clearly the problem and now that it is off the computer shuts off without a hitch.

who knowswn what Lenovo is doing these days during their Productions runs - we got 12 x 4294CTO (all with Gorilla Glass and Win X64 ) and none (AFAIK) had that issue you described .... however I do want to ask this ....
