Anyone Know Where I Can Purchase An Expresscard SSD?

#1 Post by epu » Sat Jul 02, 2011 12:34 pm

I am so angry! I misplaced my Mobi Mtron 16GB Expresscard SSD. These were the best, highly rated and reviewed, and SLC. It was 16GB, but was fast and never failed! I can't find this SSD anywhere anymore! The ones currently available (Wintec, Filemate) are trash and die within a few months. They are also SLC.

I can't seem to find the following SSDs:

* MTron Mobi 16GB Expresscard/34 SSD
* Photofast 64GB Expresscard/54 SSD

I can't find them anywhere. One place, DV Nation, wants you to order 50 units of any Expresscard SSD! Insane!

Anyone have any tips or leads? This is the most convenient way to add a second hard drive to my X200 Tablet.

Thanks!!

Sorry I can't answer your question. But I have one: How do you use them? Can you boot from them?

I would like to use an expresscard ssd for security reasons so whenever I leave the notebook I take the card with me. Is that possible?

You can boot from them. The MOBI 3000 Expresscard SSD does 100 MB R/W and is SLC. This came out in 2008 and is still the best Expresscard SSD available. All the others available from other manufacturers are either MLC or die within months or even weeks.

I don't think Mtron makes them anymore. I am staring at the box as I type this. Pretty frustrating.......

$199 - Mtron SSD MOBI MSD-PATA3018

$139.99 - Mtron SSD MOBI MSD-PATA3018

eBay search for: mtron -lego

the "-lego" cause for some reason "Lego M:Tron" series building blocks come up a LOT... found many of them :)

The Op is looking for Expresscard. You've posted links to internal IDE SSD's.

epu, is there a reason why you would like to use an expresscard ssd and no other one? I am very interested in this as I could just plug the hdd out and go without caring about data being stolen. Do you do the same? - Taking the hdd with you when you leave the notebook even for small time? Thanks very much for your answer!

The large Photofast Expresscart 64GB is in stock for 299 USD, and I could select only one item:

The reason I prefer this Expresscard SSD is because it allows me to have the smallest setup possible - 12" notebook w/TWO hard drives. That particular Expresscard SSD was indestructible. Seeing as they do not make that card anymore, I might have to bite the bullet and purchase a larger laptop like the T400s or something.

With the x220 you have a small rather lightweight notebook with up to three hard drives:
- expresscard ssd
- msata ssd
- sata ssd

You can use the supertalent corestore ssd in lots of notebooks, too. This is a mini pci ssd which - in contrast to the msata ssds - has its own controller. The reliable intel 310 msata ssd only works in systems where the mini pci slot is sata configured.
