I ordered an X201 (customised) when it eventually arrived the box it came in had been crushed. I didn't bother opening it just told Lenovo to come and collect it and send me a new one. They cannot do that, as it is a customised item, so they refunded me fully first then I had to re-order it.
Here in England there is also distance selling regulations which mean if you are not satisfied with your purchase you can send it back within 7 days for a full refund.

None of the above is applicable to the OP's situation, so I'm wondering what your point is.

If the US has distance selling regulations similar to the UK, the OP can simply send back his X220 and re-order it with the webcam. I would assume this to be the simplest way of getting a webcam into the laptop. ie,
another method of getting an integrated camera, as I believe the OP asked!

I don't believe that we (USA) have any laws pertaining to "distance selling regulations" as does the UK or EU, especially if the reason that the buyer is unsatisfied was due to his/her own ordering error. Your example of damaged caused in transit is a totally different matter. However, even if the seller does agree to take the system back, they will probably charge a restocking fee. I believe that Lenovo's policy is 15% of the sale price. You also have to figure in return shipping which would be paid by the buyer. While this may be a "simple" method, it may not be all that cost effective.

It is very easy to install the camera yourself, might take 5-10min max. All you have to do is remove the lcd bezel and install it. Unlike past model you don't even need to replace the entire bezel to have the viewing hole for the camera, just the little cutout below the thinklight. The camera is $60 to buy from Lenovo, part 04W1364.

The law is not there to protect you from ordering errors the law is designed to give the consumer a chance to return a good that was not seen prior to purchase. If you were to buy the good in a shop, and therefore see the goods, you do not have the right to return it for a full refund. If a company has forgone the cost of operating a retail unit then the consumer should be afforded some protection and this I think is very sensible. Postage costs are similar to costs of going to a shop to purchase a good so not sure that that big a consideration should be given to that point.
That the US does not have similar laws does not surprise me in the least. However if it is a simple $60 fix then clearly it's easier to just buy the integrated camera and install it. I just thought it might have been one of those items that has to be installed at the manufacturing stage.
